Sorta an update to the corn I talked about being planted when I was working on our oats. Andy went to Mt. Sterling, IL this AM to get our replacement bull. Crossing the Illinois River where corn was planted the middle of March. It is now up, 4 inches plus and looking good. Will it have its growing point above ground with a late frost? Is there a "real" shortage of seed corn? Time will tell.

I work for a crop insurance company. Here in IL, tomorrow is the first day you can plant corn and have replant coverage. Anything already planted that gets frosted off, (when the growing point finally is above ground) the replant cost is not covered.

Yes, and because we fight a flood problem we have not started planting corn. We feel we can not risk not having crop insurance coverage. Those who have up land probably will be able to enjoy a price premium, with early fall delivery, by planting now. It is not in the cards for us. Question is, will we have a killing frost this spring.

If you central and southern Il. farmers don't mind, may I ask what date did some start planting the corn, what is the normal traditional date for planting corn? If this works out, would it be possible to have two corn crops this year? Is this sweetcorn or field corn (or both)? Could we have early (65day) sweetcorn for Memorial day??
Thanks |

Im 25 miles north of Mt Sterling and the thermometer says 32 right now..little breeze might be the only saving grace.

Three leaves on corn, Frost can kill it, We've been waiting for the Insurance date before starting, Some corn in our area with 3 leaves, forecast of 28 in the morning, I really hope the corn planted makes it, I think it gives all of us something to watch and learn from.
