Granddad used to have a little shed with a creek running through it to keep things cold. Keep in mind this was in Oklahoma, though, and our creeks may or may not have water, depending on the time of year. Haha

My great grandfathers place had an artesian well. They cemented in a tank below ground level to put milk cans in, then ran an overflow underground to the barn yard. The water ran all the time, keeping milk cool and the overflow kept the tank full for hogs and cattle in the yard. excess water just ran down to the creek from the barn yard.No pump and no windmill needed.
That barn is gone, taken down for salvage lumber about 2000. The barn I "grew up in" is still standing Been around for a LONG time. The original owner settled there in 1840 or so, but the current barn my have been built several years later. I took this last winter while clearing brush from the old yard. ![]() This is the barn(on left) many years ago. Mary White (in the picture)the original settlers daughter sold the place to my Grandpa back in the early 1900's but was left 5 acres and the house her dad built in 1847, as long as she lived. I grew up in the house her Dad built . Dad grew up in "grandma's house" which Grandpa moved to it's current location after buying the property. ![]() Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 23 Dec 2017 at 9:36am |
