Why can't they leave well enough alone. All they're doing is exposing their idiocy, as if we can't figure out that it's all about the money. I have a Dell 4600 series that's been a great computer, but they insist on making these great updates. Now they've really screwed it up so that Dell takes over the whole screen and I've got to figure out how to circumnavigate it. (successfully) But it's the idea that I had no choice in the matter (oops there it goes again) Life is complicated enough without this baloney. Wait until my daughter get's hold of this thing. Boy will they be sorry. Leon

Google; "How to stop windows automatic updates" Follow directions. Ignore the little notes that pop up down in the corner that says you need updates, it'll go away!

Thanks John. You know, the computer kept telling me to update, but I ignored it. So they went ahead and did it anyway and added a lot more advertisements is all I got out of it. There can be a little note pop up that says I can go back to the way it was. Doesn't work. Or maybe for that session and is right back. Leon

re:
Why can't they leave well enough alone cause there's no money in that ! YOU wouldn't buy another computer or OS or ap.. I haven't bought a new PC in DECADES, last one was a Tandy TX. As for 'updates', you can STOP any OS from updating. I've got W7 Ultimate on this, free, PC and never updated it in over 3-4 years. Yes, I update the AntiVirus DATABASE( NOT program) and Mozilla Firefox..though when I want to. ALL 'automatic' updates have been disabled. 'If it ain't broke, no need to fix it'!! Actually some updates DO more harm than good. Mozilla Thunderbird's newer versions won't run a lot of previous 'addons', so I use an older version. It's worked for years. My backup PC has XP Pro on it, rock stable and IT'S backup has W98 SE, again rock stable. I can surf the Web, get emails and ALL of my microcomputer design/build programs work fine. |

'updates' are generally not required unless you modify your hardware or install a new program. Falls into the 'if it ain't broke no NEED to fix it' catagory. In the mid 70s I had to update the OS by editing the files on the drive manually(every 2 weeks+-), today the 'patches' are huge files you download. The main problem is nobody tests the updates properly. It's just not practical for them to do that and it leads into real nasty gremilins. A case...One 'ap' updated itself and after that, one USB port failed to properly work. It had been collecting realtime data from the greenhouse for YEARS. It took me 2 days of low level debugging to finally figure out the 'updated' ap had changed a parameter of that USB port. Why ? There's no reason. No way a 'normal' PC user would have a clue and no tech, unless he KNEW my PC and what it does. yes some updates like virus databases need updates but a lot of them are designed to make you buy a new PC. I run an older version of Thunderbird ( email program, er 'ap') as newer ones are NOT 'backward compatible' to run some 'addons' that I use to make it run better, for me. The software I use to program the chip that does that Greenhouse monitoring has had 220-230 'updates' and I've never installed them. While they may improve the program, nothing actually helps me. With any update, you NEED to do a total backup before so that if (when) the 'update' makes your PC go 'funny', you CAN go back to the previous configuration that DID work ! |

If you are running WIN7............ one "auto update" that Microsoft trys to install is WIN10..... that can be a BIG problem on an older computer with non matching programs... WHY DO IT ? Turn "auto" OFF.

use win 10 to start with,---nuttin wrong with it. --- there is no support for older stuff like 98, 7, and that stuff anymore. AND they will install whatever they want even if you check all the no boxes---thats just the way it is. My good computer was 98 and the best one I ever had---till ms killed it trying to install something that wasnt compatable in it. ---they do this to get all old units off the internet-----thats how they get their jollies.

What AC tractor do you have? Or at least you wish you had. Now do you really what me pitch your engine out in the scrape pile. Then replace it with a battery and a solar panel. Now you get your car stuck in the blizzard and need a tow up the driveway. But this latest and greatest is the"new tec" ,but the battery doesn't like the cold and the solar panel is not producing with snow piling up on it. If only you had that old dino burner the car is tucked away in the garage in nothing flat.So as Jay put it. IF IT ANT BROKE DON"T FIX IT Old curmudgeons don't like change.![]() ![]() |

OLD stuff works fine, but isn't bringing any $$$ into their coffers. Like Ray quoted Jay, "IF IT ANT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." |

Well,,I'm 97% sure that Microsoft has me on their special list ,,"DO NoT NOTIFY" when time for their updates cause they know I'll be puttin there friggin updates off as long as I can,,,but they "Done It" earlier tonite,,,,tied up my PC for over an hour and locked it where I could not use it. I've argued with MS for the longest and their response is that ,,,,"MS OWNS the program and they will update when they see fit" They still owe me a perfectly good PC that they FU** up because of their updates to where I had to buy this PC. Don't even get me started on MS's updates,,,,I'm outa here,,,!!!! sorry MoFo's

Ya Joe I just had the download forced on me to, it's just waiting for a shutdown and startup to automatically install. I know I can startup on a thumb drive and the go into my windows 10, but sooner or later it's gonna happen (most likely someone else doing a restart thinking they have to when I'm not around to protect it) yep sooner or later. Had all the do not downloads set but I understand that has a time limit that will expire now. Getting as bad as the Gov. I just hate having to figure out all problems these updates create every time.

I don't ,can't and won't run Windows10, though you should be able to NOT 'autoupdate' or 'autoinstall' any files for anything. You may have to create a simple 'script' aka 'batch file' to run everyday to set the 'NOautoupdate' bits or flags for the aps or programs though.

Actually they just own the MS Operation Systems. There are alternatives like Linux so you DO have choices unlike buying a 'green' tractor and HAVING to get serviced by you know who.... |

I have several 'engineering' programs that work 100% under LINUX and another choice is to simply cut code in Delphi. It doesn't use the Windows DLLs and as such is a totally selfcontained program, 100% transportable to any PC. Real hardcore prorammers still use Assembler... I do for the micros I program, last major projects were Z80 assembler. The problem lies in Windows having grabbed 85%(??) of the market, Mac maybe 10%, others the remainder. For any seller of programs or aps, you cut code for the largest market, and that on the PC platform was, is and forever will be Windows.... Kinda like the 3 point hitch system....anyone know of ANY Snap-Coupler implements being made today ?

The first thing that I do when I get a new computer in my hands or when I reinstall windows on my PC is that I go to settings and turn all the updates off. All these big and little updates annoy me a lot. I'm fine with Windows, and I use my PC just for work; I don't need any small features that would screw the whole thing up. I regret that there is no such button in Windows 10 to turn all the updates off for once. You can only postpone them, and they will still be installed if you don't pay attention to the updates center. It annoys me because I am the user, and I pay for this operating system, so why can't I decide whether I want to get these updates or not? I do completely understand the OP. Once, my PC crashed because of these updates, and I had to look for someone who could make a data recovery near me. I have almost lost all the information from my PC's hard drive. This was not fun, and I think Microsoft should add the possibility of turning off all the updates forever.

I use "Windows Update Blocker". Turn it on and windows updates are stopped until it is turned back on.
