All planter have their flaws, but the 385 is one heck of a good planter. They put just as good of stands out there as the new planters do. I havent had much trouble with them.

I have had experience with JD 7000 planters, all bad.  Most overrated piece of equipment ever made by Deere.  Neither one would hold a decent population, even after being gone over by the local dealer.  I used an antiquated Allis 500 with disc openers.  It was a plate planter yet, and even with todays poorly graded corn, it would hold a population much better than the 7000, with just as even a stand.  It was just not heavy enough for no-til.
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

Upstate, as Daehler said from the "Showmee" state, it will probably do everything that you want done for one heckova lot less money than the other green planter. They are a class machine and give very serviceable performance, and since they don't have the right green with yellow wheels, you're not going to put out a bundle of money. Is there a better planter, sure, finger pick ups with the accuracy kits installed, either in a blue or green shade. But for them to plant right, you are married to no more than 5 mph! So if time is an issue, and cracking a little more throttle will beat a rain and get that field done, rely on a 385 to do it. Blue and green wont plant accurately at 7.5 - 8 mph, and a 385 sure will! To sell any other planter than a deere or kinzie to some people would be like getting 427,Mark to vote repugness! Hee hee
You don't really have to be smart if you know who is!
