How can I tell the difference between a 230cid and a 262cid both of them came out from a combine. The 262 that I have has a tag on the block that tell me want it is but the other motor doesn't. The  untagged motor is currently in a  WD frame and is froze up. This one was set up to run a saw mill and the man who did it is no longer with us. I would like replace it with the 262 motor. Can I just swop these two motors?

They are much the same on the outside so should swap. Don't know if they used 2 different water pump locations on gas engines like diesels.

7060, not to change the OP's question, but seems like dad's A had a Hercules engine in it ?? It was a gasser BTW, and a LONG time ago WinkSmile.

OK - I believe I got what I need. I have a guy that wants the 262 and he has a 230 that he wants to do a trade with some extra cash. I need to find out if his 230 is in workable condition first. The 262 that I have rolls over but I have not hear it run. Maybe I should do a quick tune-up add some  gas  connect a battery cross a wire or two and try to start it. Oh and thanks for the replies.

Your Dad’s 1953-57 gleaner A had the Hercules QLXD 6-237 engine @55hp. And before then, the 1950-52 Gleaner A had the Ford 6-226 engine @70hp. These early engine configurations would have also applied to the Gleaner model B & R.
Allis-Chalmers purchased Buda engine Company in 1953 and Gleaner Harvester Corp in 1955.

Thanks, dad had the engine rebuilt in around 1970, but the machine was ran until 1990 Smile on a much smaller scaled operation .
