What's the best way to go about this? Remove that big ol Eaton 13 speed (we haven't got a good trans jack) or pull motor? We need to replace the clutch.
Thanks

Pull the transmission and rent a good transmission jack if you were closer you could borrow mine. Take your time setting jack up and put a good size ratchet strap around it. Taking it out is easy putting it back everything has to be dead on and get a good clutch line up shaft. I use an old input shaft to line everything up.

I made a makeshift transmission jack out of my floor jack by welding a round pin the size of pin on the cup of my floor jack to a 1/4" steel plate about 1' square. I would put the plate on the floor jack in place of the cup any time that I needed to remove or install a transmission. Not as versatile as a true transmission jack but it did the job.

I ditto Red Bank.  A trans jack with a tie down on it makes it fairly easy, if you have a level floor (concrete) to work on. An alignment bolt on the bell housing helps get it in place easier. I find the bigger trucks easier to work on then small ones as there is more space under and around the parts.  Plus the parts are way to heavy for a guy to think he can just manhandle it into place....

that is a big and heavy transmission.. I wouldn't trust a converted floor jack,, go borrow, steal or buy you a TRANSMISSION jack heavy enough to handle the weight,,, or farm it out to a truck shop....
put in new throw out brg shaft and bushings while its apart....

and what John said...

Got a bid from a local truck repair shop, $1700 was the estimate. We might just let them do it. I have used a floor jack for smaller trans and didn't like it. I've done clutch work on other similar trucks but not with a big ol 13 speed
Thanks for the input.

Does it have a double disk in it. I had one and it rattled like the old 3208cat with a double disk. Sorta a pain in the rear gear to change.

I don't know for sure what kind of clutch it has. Since I have plenty to do to keep me busy, I think I'll let the truck shop do this one.

some things are best left to the experts... while 1700 may be  alot of coins...you GET a WARRANTY on the work done ! AND it's usually done in a couple days AND you don't have any busted fingers, mashed toes, or funerals to go to....

Dependent on the year will either be a 14" two plate or a 15" both spicer. You will need a trans jack capable of handling almost a thousand pounds with oil still in the trans and if has PTO that ma need come off. There are nuances to these such as replacing and aligning the center plate dogs on a 14" having the arm strength to hang a 15" loaded and also having a 2" input shaft for aligning the plates. If has a 'Button' clutch those have to be face to face when installed or will chatter to hell and back possibly even slip under severe load.

Under $2000 at a shop is cheap insurance. May also need a input shaft or flywheel reface, TRUST THE MECHANIC as to his suggestions.

Now the next question. I have a half inch of free board left on the clutch pedal with no more adjustment. Will it make it through the fall? Lots of short trips from field to bins or farm to farm no more than 5 miles. And my 18 year old son is only on his second year driving it field to bin, possibly a little highway time this year.

Since only time the clutch is used is starting or stopping - if it isn't slipping when starting in motion it should . The trany should shift without the clutch once moving .
I changed a lot of them on COE Petes with 8V-71 power and 13 Speed but had access to a Blackhawk heavy jack from shop up the road from me .
On my old White had the 5 speed main with single disc clutch and bought a transmission jack for about $400 that handled most - did a couple 13 speeds with it but not as stable as the large jacks that are made for HEAVY  truck units .

unless you intend on using a trans jack rated for a roadranger then dont even mess with it because  bad things will happen  with proper jack it isnot so bad

The only time it will fail will be half stuck in a soft spot in the field with a full load on when you need it most. Get a clutch in it now and be done.

DMiller, that's exactly what I told Dad, if it gets wet....and right now, that seems a long shot, it would be harder on the ol gal. It really hasn't gotten much worse in the last 3 years, so I think we are going to run it this fall and send it in after the 1st of the year. That ol 13 speed, if you start out in low, loaded, you can let the clutch out without touching the fuel pedal. I am not going to do it myself, I'll let the experts handle this one when the time comes.
Thanks for all the  input.

I know you said you have 1/2 of freeplay at the pedal and no more adjustment left. Have you been adjusted freeplay with the linkage or at the pressure plate? And when you look up through the inspection access how far from the clutch brake is the throwout bearing?

At the linkage. I wasn't aware it could be adjusted at the pressure plate. I'll have a look at the gap when I get a chance.
