Hi Guys, I have a old cleat track dozer with a wd45 motor and tranny in it. This has been the best running machine i have been around. I use it to plow snow and level out my drive way. I have had it about 10 years. Every once in a while when i start it and put in gear i get a little grinding but not bad like the clutch is not fully disengaged. i was on it this last week scraping some gravel about half the time i stop to change direction i could not get back in gear unless i shut motor off ,put in gear and restart and go. some times if shifts perfect with no issues. Is there a inspection plate on bottom of wd45 bell housing? I havent crawled under it yet. if there is a inspection plate what should i look for under the plate? I have tried adjusting the clutch to give it more free play space. I dont want to separate motor/tranny unless i have to. Thanks for any help or advice

Sure would like to see a picture of it... WD/45 had bell housing bolted to hydraulic and /pto/hand clutch section... older WC's had transmissions bolted to clutch housing.

You need LESS free play to get more dissengagement. Could be dry/bad pilot bearing or maybe loose rivets or lining coming apart. Sounds like you have had good service from this unit so you should consider doing a proper fix by removing the engine and fixing it right. I also would like to see a picture.

Ok thanks for the help/advise sounds like I need to pull it apart. Im not exactly sure what I have but looking at pictures it looks like a hg crawler. Im sure the engine is a allis chalmers but I guess im not sure what the bell housing on back is. I haven't done a lot of research on it because never have had any issues. The engine has a water pump and inspection plate on side if that helps. I did replace the manifold when I first got it because one of the ears had been broke off and wanted to fix it. That is when I realized it was a allis chalmers motor. I will try and post pictures on here when I get some. Thanks

I don't know much about the differences in the allis chalmer motors or trannys. I have been reading a little about clutches on here. What is the "hand clutch" where is that in relationship to the foot clutch. I don't seam to have the hand clutch. Thanks

It's probably an Allis 'B' or 'C' engine. There have been several installed on the HG crawlers and make a nice installation.

I took another look at my dozer today I think the motor and bell housing are from wd 45 then it's married to the HG transmission. I used it a little over the weekend clutch works great sometimes but not diisengage some times. It does not slip at all. I took some pictures but could not figure how to make them small enough to post on here. The motor block has a stamp of AM 3853-21. Are all wd45 engine clutches the same? I need to get a kit ordered up thanks

Okay, the engine looks like a WD45 engine, the clutch /flywheel housing may have come from a 100 combine... if it is foot clutch, it will be a spring loaded clutch, if it is a hand clutch, that will be a snap over designed clutch such as a rockford. The tracks look like they are from an HG oliver. Thanks for the pictures.

You can shrink picture sizes with the picture loading option. Set the width to 640 and the height to 480 on the lower left corner of the options.

There’s a bit more power in that engine than the one that came in that machine! Please keep that in mind as you use it.

Had a chance to work on dozer for a bit this weekend. I pulled the cover off between bell housing and transmission and they are coupled together with a chain sprocket coupling. With the motor off and transmission in gear, clutched pushed in i can spin the out put shaft with one finger. I could not fill the slightest resistance at all. I started the motor with clutch in and watched the out put shaft. It turned fast at the start but but slowed way down after about 20 seconds. I can barley touch the output shaft with a stick and it quits turning. Once it quits turning it stays stopped until i let out the clutch. Im starting to think it may be a little rust on flywheel/pressure plate or maybe little oil on clutch making it a little sticky. Tried pulling inspection cover off bottom of bell hosing but there is a cross member there and cant get to bolts to pull cover.
