    Posted: 28 Jun 2017 at 6:08pm
Started hearing a clunking noise while I was mowing with my NF Ser I . On level ground every thing is fine .When tractor leans on un even ground is when the clunking noise starts . I thought it was the eccentrics on the power adjust rims but after lifting each side off the ground I believe the wheel bearing on one side is shot or soon to be shot . When tire on right side is off ground I can tilt it in and out a little bit. Other side does not tilt in and out at all . I assume wheel bearing is shot on this side . I will take tire off when I have more time to safely tear in to it . I guess what I am asking is what am I getting into . Limited knowledge and time, basic tools . concrete slab to work on .No shop , but plenty of tarps . Always reluctant to start a project I have never done before . Have heard horror stories of working on the back end of these machines . Not a show tractor but I need a worker and want to keep it going . Any advice would be much appreciated .

Reading up in my IT manual on the D-17 . More I read the less I want to work on this . Any chance adding some shims will correct problem or is damage already done to bearings / cones / cups ?

Might just need to tighten the bearings on that side a little. Nut is under cap on final drive.

Remove bolt, there should be shim behind. Remove shim and tighten bolt. MACK

Did you check the rails on your rims to make sure they
are not loose. They may have a spot that is worn and you
may have to move it in or out to cure your clunk.

If you got clunking...I don't think shims is the fix.The axle shaft is the easy one.Remove wheel and inner bolt and pound out of bull gear. Some come out easy, some don't.At that point you can inspect brgs and races.Replace as necessary. The upper pinion pretty much requires pulling final hsg off to remove drum to get shaft out.It has shims also for tightening. The upper shaft was where my 45 had brg trouble. You can inspect the outer brg on upper shaft by pulling cap.Good luck. Mine had sat for long period and brgs rusted.Only oil they get is what the bull gear carries up.

If you need the pinion shaft out, the axle housing has to come off. You'll need a cherry picker to handle it unless you're built like The Rock. Removing shims might tighten it up, might be a bearing coming apart.

Removed bolt , 4 shims behind big washer . Removed 1 shim and seemed tighter . Removed 2 and slop disappeared . Went for a drive and clunk is still there . Oh well, project is getting bigger . I will update post after holiday ,,,if I still have my fingers .

Hnnnn, years ago my JD developed a knock/klunk in the rear.

When I stared in the rear end some teeth were laying in the oil under the diffy.

Hope you have better luck than me.
