My D-14's gas tank has sat empty for a number of years. It has a light coat of rust on the inside. Doesn't cover the whole tank. What is the best way to get rid of the rust? If I should line the tank afterward, what is a good product for doing this? Thanks. rrhead(SD)

I used a tank liner kit from the local auto parts store.  The cleaner they use is muriatic acid so you could get some of that and try it.  Another recommendation is put nuts and bolts, or gravel in the tank, strap it to a tractor wheel and drive around for a while.

You may want to increase your font size.  Most of the older guys on here won't be able to read it.  Heck most all the guys on here!!LOL

Lightly sand blast the tanks bottom and shop vac out the sand and then power wash and air dry.

I have done what John has suggested several times.  I have had good luck.  Any local garage should be able to do an acid soak (or more) to get the rust out.  IF it still looks flaky after that, then get it lined.  You will never have a rust problem again.

The age old farmer fix was to strap the tank to the rear wheel of a farm tractor, put some varsal and a light chain inside the tank, attach cap, and go do something, like plow, disc, or bush hog, a couple hours, with the tractor...  Multi-tasking, at its best.  I'da posted a video, but couldn't find the original of one of the forum members, here doing this, with a WD-45...

I hate to give the copy-cats any more views, for an idea they stole, here...Wink

Thank you for the responses. I think I will try the muriatic acid first and see how that works. It's not too bad looking, so hopefully it will clean up easy. I make the font one size bigger so I can proof read it better. I could always make it bigger! Thanks. rrhead(SD)

If you use the muriatic acid, you have to neutralize it right away, and it will most likely flash rust some before you are done rinsing it out.
