I know the chrome trimmed decals first came out on the D19 and then made their way to the Series 2 D15 and Series 3 D17. Any idea when they dropped the chrome background? The all original 1964 D15 I am currently restoring did not have them. Curious more than anything!

Hmmm, really? That is curious, Myron.
My 1963 D-15 series II had chrome decals. Wondering what others have...? |

Interesting. My neighbor's '63 D-15 II has the chrome decals. I checked my D-17 IV brochure dated 659 shows all pictures except one with chrome decals. My guess they were dropped as a cost cutting measure sometime late '64 or early '65

Myron,
I am curious what your tractor does have in lieu of the chrome decals. Are you able to share any pictures on the forum? If not, PM me and I can give you my email address. Thanks, Tom

Have two 63 SII's with chrome also, maybe just a "install what we have in stock" that day on the line?

I would say chrome was in the beginning of the full length hood decals and then later on they dropped the chrome to cut costs. Maybe their vendor went belly up and a new vendor was unable to do the chrome, but no way did they have both types at the same time mixing them up as tractors went down the assembly line. Don't think I've ever seen an S4 with chrome and remember advertising lit pics may have been pre-production.

I just looked in Norm Swinford's book to see if I could find an answer. I think DSeries4 has it right.
The D-19 came out in December, 1961 with the full hood decals. The D-17 Series III came out in late 1962 with the full hood decal. The D-15 Series II came out in very early in 1963 with the full hood decal. The pictures in the book don't show enough detail to actually see the chrome border. HTH

My Grandpa's 1965 series 4 diesel, serial number 79556, had those chrome trimmed hood decals, he bought it new.

It is serial number 17179 (hard to read), which does make it a 64. More early than late, by my estimates. Here are the original decals. They are at the body shop now, so these are the only pictures I have. The chrome decals I have seen have a rectangle around the "Allis Chalmers" script. These ones do not appear to have that. ![]() ![]() She's not quite ready for decals yet, but still considering the most correct type... ![]() |
