Finally got time to drag the steering strainer out of the 7G, looked like a chia pet when removed, this is it after initial cleaning to bring home and make a new gasket.  Stopped at NAPA bought new hose for the suction nipple and new roll gasket material, somebody had 'Blue Glued' it together last time and the hose sections were swollen from oil/age.  Hopefully this cleaned, new filters and fresh fluid will make it better.

Thats usually the start of all the trouble with the hydraulic steer tractors Dave. Blocked strainer and/or loose hose connections or shot hose letting in air, all causing the little pumps to cavitate, then its game over, the pumps are shot. Keeping the strainer clean and hosing tight and in good order prevents that. The brake linings need to be replaced before they start to break down and block the strainer as well. good thing you got yours in time.

Pretty much a self feeding/self eating system, debris builds, clutches drag, brakes wear faster, more debris, etc.  Are the other crawlers on the market and farms pretty much the same?

I only know HD6E 14484 on, HD6EP, and HD11E/EP 10000 to somewhere mid 12000s are all same system as your 7G. HD11s later changed to a single pump system with no power assist brake. HD6 Merv worked as a diesel mechanic for many years and is familiar with the steering systems of other makes of tractors. He has told me of some of their workings, but these days,  I have enough trouble remembering how to keep my ACs in shape!

Yeah, all caterpillars are the same. some have a seperate steering pump, but most have one pump to feed transmission and steering systems.
all have a suction screen before pump and then go to a pressure filter. The setup on a cat d4D/E is no better than a 6ep for access. But D6s and up had a much more accesible screen to get at; jusst under floor plates.
Got another HD6 fanatic in nz. Peter oFlaherty from wellington modified his 2 6Es by remote mounting a cat suction screen to catch any rubbish. Is alot more accesible now.
But as long as screens are checked every trans oil change, you should be ok. But if brake linings are going rotten on you, then you will have screen problems till you reline the brakes. This is worse on a 6EP/7G because both steering and trans pumps  suck off the one tit !
Rain here in NZ today, so not working, just looking on putas 2day !

Thanks for the info guys, experience always rules!  I had not had done much work to shuttle shift/hydraulic assist units until this tractor, had run quite a few but were lease units so little to no heavy maintenance work from me.

PS pump wouldn't pull a prime, may end up pulling it for inspection and possibility of a overhaul if can get any parts for it.  Any of you guys ever tag a feed line off the main trans pump on one of these? to feed the steering system?  Do you think it would work if I can't get the little pump repaired?
