Got rained out today and was working on the WD. I picked up a distributor drive from a WD45 off of ebay a couple months back and was going to take the mag governor drive off of my WD and replace it with the distributor drive. I took off the radiator and front cover by the governor spring but didn't find any marks on the governor drive gear or the cam gear to align things. What is the best method to do this? thanks for any help.

Last time I messed with governor, I set engine at top dead center on compression stroke and pulled old gov out and slipped different assembly with pointer of dist. at number oneplug wire and bolted in. Then checked forks and linkage. while your at it, check governor cross shft and bushings for wear too.

Chuck,I'm looking through my manuals about this and it's somewhat vague as to the timing marks where you would be assembling this.
My guess is to find TDC on the #1 cylinder, and then get the rotor on the distributer within that #1 position and go from there?,,that'd be my approach.

Ok, now I have another question. Which post should be number one on the distributor? I know it doesnt' matter all that much as long as the wires go around right, but as long as I am going at this, I might as well get it right.

Well,,,good point,,,on my WD the post (as you're facing the distributer) on the outer left is #1,,
The manual says this,,,,"Crank the engine until #1 piston is coming up on compression stroke then crank slowly and stop when fly-wheel mark "fire" is in center of inspection port (bottom of clutch housing On WD and WD45). Place distributer rotor in position where metal strip on top of same is pointing toward battery lead terminal on distributer body. With contacts set to .022 gap, place distributer in mounting bracket and engage the driving members. Now rotate distributer cam as far as it will go in direction of its normal rotation and while holding it in this position, rotate the distributor body until the contacts just start to open. Now tighten the mounting bracket to lock the distributor in this position. This information is per, I&T shop service manual,,,,hope it helps!

ONe of the benefits of the distributor is infinate timing adjustment. So.... It doesn't matter which post is #1. Bring it to TDC on any cylinder, and rotate the distributor until the bug is just past one of the post when you put the cap back on. Snap the cap back on and then set the order to 1243.
