I hope it's ok to ask a cat question on here if not just let me know. I have a 1984 953 cat with the 3204 engine. Recently it just all of a sudden started having blow by bad. It's light blue but there is a bunch of it. I've heard it could be a bad turbo or even a bad injector. I'm hoping it's not more serious. It starts and runs like a champ and doesn't seem to be using any oil. Any ideas on what it might be?

Are you getting any diesel into your oil? That can cause the smoke and also give the appearance of no oil consumption.

I did change the oil and still does it. I don't think I'm getting fuel into the oil.

I should have asked; are describing smoky blow-by your through the crankcase breather, or smoky exhaust?

Crankcase breather. It's light blue in color but pretty heavy.

make sure turbo is free. and check injectors one could be pouring fuel in while running. I had a d5 b model do what your describing and i took injectors off and one had end broke off and gone. good luck. the only other thing is a galded piston. that i could think of.

Excess crankcase pressure means something isn't right in either the breather or something is pressurizing the lower end . 
 First thing to come to mind is leaking pistons- either as in bad rings , scored cylinder wall, or the other thing of hole in piston . 
 Excess turbo pressure that is leaking by pistons would be other culprit. 
Now my old D6-9U had blowby - but I call that just plain worn out but as engine barley made 1000 RPM (seemed like around 500) as long as it ran it moved dirt.

Does it have blowby at idle and high idle no load? If so then I would say not a turbo because your making no boost. In reality you need to do a compression or a leak down test of each cylinder. Then you'll know the problem is in the bottom or not.

I just checked earlier today. Has minimal blowby at idle but wide open it has a lot. Sitting still not under a load that is.

Compression or leak down test is in order. You probably have a gualded cylinder. Probably caused by a nozzle hanging open and overfueling. It happens. So if you replace a cylinder I would install a nozzle on that cylinder. If your engine doesn't have a ton of hours on just do the one cylinder.

I just realized you said 3204, I was thinking 3304. I don't think you have replaceable liners like a 3304. If it has liners it would be cheaper to fix...

Features

The 953 has a 3204 direct injection turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 110 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a hydrostatic transmission. It comes standard with an electronic monitoring system, sealed and lubricated tracks, oscillating undercarriage, and a Z-bar linkage.

The 953 was manufactured in the USA, with a 05Z or 76Y serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 44Z or 78Y prefix; and in France, with a 20Z or 77Y prefix.

The 44Z unit has 19.7-inch (50-cm) track shoes. All other units have 15-in. (38-cm) track shoes.

The 20Z, 44Z, and 05Z are Low Ground Pressure (LGP) units with a 71-in. (180-cm) track gauge.

Both American units have a rollover protection system.

In 1983 Caterpillar increased digging depth, beginning with 20Z00232, 77Y01039, 05Z00345, and 76Y01147. At the same time the 76Y unit received an attachment idler guard. A new scroll fuel system was added to the French units, beginning with 20Z00267 and 77Y01093.

In 1984 Cat added a dual setting relief valve, beginning with 05Z00504 and 76Y01281. A new brake control system was added, beginning with 05Z00529 and 75Y01269. The loader frame was changed, beginning with 44Z00354, 05Z00597, and 76Y01269.

Production ended in the USA in 1985.

In 1985, Cat made modifications to the undercarriage, beginning with 20Z00425, 77Y01395, 44Z00461, and 78Y01005.

Production of 77Y ended in 1986.

In 1987 fuel tank capacity was increased, beginning with 20Z01464.

In 1989 a horizontal hydrostatic filler base was added, beginning with 20Z02894.

In 1990 Cat added a general-purpose bucket with fabricated hinges and a vertical face on the back, beginning with 20Z03491, 44Z00710, and 78Y01180. The track roller frame was changed and the equalizer bar was shortened, beginning with 20Z03520.

Production ended in France in 1992; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 953B.

Production of 78Y ended in 1981; 44Z ended a year later.

I guess I'll just tare into it and see what the damage is. It's hard to believe it would still run so good and burn no oil with a scored cylinder. But I guess weird things like that happen.

As mentioned above, leak down test first, then maybe boresscope if possible while the injectors are out for visual inspection. Maybe just broken comp. ring.
