I learned in high school wood shop how to true a square and always check one before any project. Bet nobody that graduated in the last 20 can claim the same.

I learned ,the hard way, that my 4' level wasn't level...... addition is still standing though after 35 years....

I do S this video shows quite often but I always check the square with a 3-4-5 method if I find discrepancies.
Doesn’t take much of a hump or dip in material to throw the square off.

Hot to bring it back to square was a tip I had not seen before , guess always felt it was a tool and would stay where needed - then seen a lot of them at garage sales = probably why - go buy a new one - give the problem to someone else .
3/4/5 is how I squared up excavations when digging footings or a basement - set up batten board corner 3 ft back from excavation and do measurements - depth became a one person job once I bought a laser transit = way back I used a optical transit but had story pole fitted with a 60p pole barn spike to hold it while I optically shot depth.

It must have been a STANLY level  . Not sure when that brand took it in the diapers, but I will NEVER purchase a tool with the STANLY name on it  !!

the combo squares is what i'm always checking, since the slider part wiggles when the nut is loosened, for short markings it's fine, but not for anything past about 2 inches.
