Even though I try to use AC as much as I can in my farm operation, I broke down yesterday and bought a JD 7000 planter.  Since I can't find sunflower discs for either the AC or DA air planters, I had no other choice.  The fact that parts are easier to get was another reason.  Oh well....

Kevin, you bought a good planter, we have used them for over 30 years.   They do look odd, though, when we have everything else orange...

The 7000 is a fine planter. It set picket fence and emergence standards much newer planters hope to achieve and sometimes do.

The original finger units are great for corn, the bean cups are an almost controlled spill. Kinze or Deere brush type bean units are better. That's for the plateless version. I've never seen a plate type 7000 other than in the parts books and manuals.

The common wear points are: 1: the arms for the depth control wheels. RK products has the best aftermarket repair kits. 2: The tail piece with the closing wheels. 3: The opening disks. Opening disks come in 3mm and 3.5mm thickness. The 3 mm disks are to be shimmed so there's two inches at the bottom from where you can't pass a business card, but the thicker ones that needs to be only an inch. 4. the V on the bottom of the seed tube guide.

There is continued discussion over on New Ag Talk crops and machinery forums.

There are many after market parts available from Sloan Express (www.sloanex.com) and Shoup (www.shoupparts.com).

I planted for about ten years, most of it notill, pulling a JD7000 with my MF-135.

Get an operator's manual. I may be able to supply, I overbought before I bought a planter. What size 7000 did you acquire?

I agree with the others-the 7000 is a good, basic planter. I have had two 6X30 7000s in the 20 years I have farmed on my own and am always happy with my stand, even now that I am no-tilling. I also agree that the bean cups are awful, I bought Kinze meters and am 100% happier.

We got one also, good planter, and yes we also have the KINZE bean meters.  Only way to go for beans.

You made a good choice, for an older planter it's hard to beat a 7000. I use Kinze brush units for beans but I've heard the Deere radial bean meters are good too. Like was said before watch the wear points. If you put some effort and a some cash in it it will plant as well as anything on the market today.

Seems like everyone is planting corn this year. Planters are $1-2K higher than last year and good 6 row 7000's are hard to find. They are a good planter even at 20 to 30 years old.
