    Posted: 13 May 2020 at 8:11am
Hello ,
My CA is stuck in either 2nd or 3rd gear with the shifting lever able to move around.  I suspect that the problem is similar to what I have had in the past on my WC where i had to revmove the lever assembly, reposition the gears to neutral and bolt back the top.  The CA is not built the same way.  But there is  side panel on the gear box.

Am I able to remove the side panel and reposition the gears and the shifting lever?
Thanks,
Dave Fullmer

No just lift the shifter boot. Under it you'll find a snap ring on top of a washer. Remove the snapping. It's kinda hard lift the shifter out of the hole. Take a big screwdriver and line up the three shifter gates. You can't line them up with the shifter in the way. Look at the end of your shifter it should look like about a 1/2" ball on the end yours probly looks like a tooth pick. You can weld and grind back to a ball.

Well, i think I might have lucked out.  The snap ring and washer was messed up a bit and I was able to pry them both out after I the boot.  I looked in the hole and could just see the gates.  Fortunately, the end of the shifting lever does not look like it is worn at all.  The ball looks perfectly round like it should.  So I got to thinking about it and decided that maybe the whole problem might be in the worn out snap ring and washer.

Got on the seat pushed the clutch in and started it up and carefully moved the the position of neutral and sure enough I was in neutral.  The tractor did not move.  Then I tried each gear forward and reverse and it would try to move as I eased out the clutch.

Tomorrow I will go to AGCO and order the right boot, snap ring and washer and put it back together.  Smile

Yeah, the washer looked a lot like a worn out oil seal.  That's why I thought I would go to the local AGCO.   One of the owners there is an old time Allis man.

Well guys (and and gals),  Got an update on my stuck in second gear problem.  After I finally got the new snap ring and washer and gear shift boot I put the snap and snap ring on, checked it out and it seemed to be able to shift correctly.  But NO....

After my son and I struggled to get the boot in place correctly it was stuck in gear again.  That required removing the new snap ring but the 2 and 3rd shift rail really looked like it has moved  far enough away from the other gates to allow the ball on the end of the shift stick to get out of place again.  It appeared obvious that we needed to open up the side plate and take a good look at shift rail assembly.

Today, my son was able to loosen up the 3 flat head screws so I could get the assembly out and once I got it out I found a piece of the 2nd/3rd rail in the bottom of the cavity.

Now I need to figure out what the best and most economical way to get a replacement.  I would think maybe the best solution would be to find a junk tractor yard that would sell me the whole assembly.

Any thoughts?

Hey, just a thought, but the C transmission is only a 3 speed transmission ?  I know a neighbor who has a junk C out in the back and am just wondering?

I have some NOS shift rails that I think are for a CA. They don't have parts numbers, so I'd need something to match them to. Also I have a complete used transmission available.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Thanks Paul,  I am not sure what the difference between rails and fingers might be.  I know the part that is broken is the part that actually slides the gear into proper position engagement.  Maybe I need to take some pictures of the assembly.

Of course the next question I would have would be is it hard to remove and replace those moving parts on the ting assembly?

You have a broken shift fork then not a broken rail. Its not hard to disassemble, just have to be careful of the detent spring and ball. They like to fly out and get lost or hit you someplace that makes you cuss.
