I have a 1953 Allis Chalmers CA and I started working on the hydraulic system. The previous owner put gear oil in the transmission and never used the hydraulics. I tried flushing the gear oil out with non detergent 20W oil a couple of times. Then I filled the transmission back up with fresh non detergent 20 20W oil and tired using the hydraulic system. After I replaced the old hydraulic hoses that broke I tried using the hydraulics again and when I went to turn off the hydraulic pump / PTO the PTO won't fully disengage. It still spins and I hear grinding. I don't know what to do now so if anyone has any information I would appreciate to hear it.

I think I would go the easy route here and remove the hydraulic pump. You should be able to see what's going on with the shift collar and fork for the PTO with it out of the way, and you can check the pick up for the pump, check for stuck pistons in the pump and clean the sump of crud that didn't get flushed out. I think 6 bolts will free the pump.

The PTO has a fork that fits into a collar on the slide gear. Since you changed oil maybe you stirred up some gunk. Just move the PTO lever in and out with some force when the tractor and is not running and try again. If that does not work, the forks may be bent or something is in the way of preventing the gear from sliding all the way back. The noise is common with worn gears and bearings.

When we had heavy oil in the rear - in our time 140 - we would drain the oil and flush it with kerosene and drive it a little to clean it out. Did you drain the oil from the PTO housing in addition to the transmission? It is easy to miss.
Charlie that is a good thought. The fact that the pump has been inactive for a prolonged period of time may have caused plungers to be frozen too. I do not recall the shifting arrangement on the CA since they came to the dealer with the PTO Hydraulic installed. The B-C - that had a similar pto hookup had a small block that fit into the shifting gear. Do not have my parts books to verify. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck! The squate bolck in the end of the handle may not be in the groove in the sliding gear, remove PTO and reinstall.
