The little grounding post broke off of my magneto. I'm wondering if I need to try and EZ out the broken piece or if I can use one of the screws holding the cover on to ground it. As of right now, my tractor is not running due to needing a new starter so I can't just try it

That would be a bolt that goes all the way thru inside an insulted insert.

Dick L, If I'm understanding your comment, I'm going to have to disassemble the magneto to get to the bolt from the inside and replace it. Along with making sure the insulating insert is good and in place. Do I have this correct?

Thank you all for the help. It is much appreciated. I just got done watching a video on the rebuild. The young gal made it look easy. Now to find some parts

So I am going to remove my magneto from the tractor, hopefully tomorrow. After noting plug wires,should I remove the cap first and note the position of the rotor and/or look at anything else to help when putting it back on?

yes.. taking the cap off is normally OK depending on what type mag you have... but the GEAR timing has to be right. If you move anything, it can change.. Need to look at the PROCEDURE for setting the GEARS right... also on reinstall on the tractor to set timing.

Some tips that may help: Take pictures as you go. Mark gears so you can put them back and have them mesh as found. Don't turn the engine while you have the mag off. Bonus: you can use the pictures to post on here!

I put a dot of paint on the beveled or marked (metal gear) tooth. It makes it much easier to see now and if you ever have it apart again.

OLD CROAK MAGNETO has a large amount of info and advice on their web site. They have worked over a couple of mags for me and I was amazed at how helpful they were with advice and the price was reasonable. They are in Washington state. Grant.

So, I ended up saying the heck with rebuilding this myself. I, maybe or maybe not could have accomplished the job without screwing it up or struggling with the 2 notoriously troublesome set screws. So I contacted Rudy Calin over in Minnesota. Great guy. He had a rebuilt in stock. After 7 hours travel, I'm happy to report that I have a virtually brand new magneto in and my tractor instantly fires up and runs like a .... new AC!! Thanks everyone for your time and advice.

Mike, That procedure rarely ever fails. It can be a little pricey, and there's transportation costs and time investment, but with it usually comes the opportunity to meet some great people, and stop at a small town diner for cheese curds!

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
