I kinda want to get a two bottom plow for my CA now so I can use it for something other than a play toy because I enjoy running it.
I was debating on setting it up so I could use my Land Pride implements I have for my Kubota, or should I look for an old plow that was made for it?
Any suggestions? This is what I have now. So do i need the snap couplers, or what all am i missing here to have a 2 bottom plow or a set of discs?  |

I've got a 3 btm SC plow here that needs to be 'rejigged' into a 2 btm... ..has a busted moldboard and I might have 'borrowed' from it..
..heckuva long roadtrip though...

You're going to want the snap coupler plow for it. A lot of the CA's performance is tied to the traction boosting system. I have a CA and it will pull 3 14's on most of my ground, but if you get into any clay or black gumbo, it struggles. 2 14's it ought to be able to pull through just about anything.

I'm all sandy soil with some small roots and rocks. But nothing the tiller hasn't gotten through.
So how does the traction booster system work? Trying to figure out what all my CA is missing. I know all about modern tractors (mostly Kubota) with 3 point hitches, but this 1955 is all new to me, LOL. I know nothing about the snap couplers other than seeing pics.

Have you got the manual? It explains it all in there.
The CA is the slickest little tractor there is!! BAR NONE.
Pound for pound, HP to HP, it'll out pull anything in its class and even way above it.
If I could only have one Allis,,,,, it'd be a real problem whether to choose the CA or the WD45.

I agree with the others, a snap couple plow is the way to go, I have a 3pH for other stuff but always break ground with my sc plow.

I have been collecting the CA attachments, but the shed is full. I would be willing to sell a pin type two bottom plow, Full mounted cultivator and extra parts. Also a two bottom roll over plow. Email lselkriver@gmail.com if interested.

Sounds like you have light enough ground that you could probably get away with a 3-14 plow, but I'd still go with 2-14s if it were me. The traction booster is all there on your tractor. How it works is there is a large spring under the tractor connected to the bell your drawbar hooks into. Everything is pulled from that bell, the lift links only raise or lower the implement. When you're pulling a plow and you find a heavy spot like clay, and the plow pulls harder, the spring will compress a little and move linkage on the hydraulic pump, raising the implement slightly. This puts more weight on the rear wheels giving you more traction. Go on YouTube and search for Allis-Chalmers videos. Look for Plowing For Profit. It does a very good job of explaining how it works. There's also one on the CA called A New Modern Power Package that shows a CA in action. All you're missing are the lift arm latches for snap coupler.

You need the "lift latches"" for the lift arms. They are a bit harder to find for the CA than for the WD45. The Snap Couple plow would be the way to go in my opinion. If you just have a small garden spot to plow, it is real handy being mounted. If you have good ballast, you can pull a drawbar type 2-14 in light ground with little problems, just not as handy for tight spots.

OK thanks for the information everyone. Now I understand how the traction booster works. I always thought the snap couplers WERE the pieces I was missing off the lift arms. Guess I was using the wrong name for them.
I will be looking to buy but not until spring. Got a couple other projects using my money right now, but by spring I will be looking.
I think I can get the ends for the lift arms from Steiner's or Yesterday's Tractor or one of the vendors here?

Steiners doesn't carry them. New ones are not available, however some people here would be able to find a pair of good uses for you. Post a want ad in the classified section.

 Here is a photo of my CA and a Bush Hog finish mower using a snap coupler / 3 Pt adapter. Its not ideal for everything 3pt, but can work well for many jobs as this shows.

You can purchase a 3 Point hitch adapter for the CA Snap Coupler. There are 2 kinds available; one that bolts to your drawbar and a "wish bone" type that replaces the drawbar (as shown by the photo above). With a 3PTH, you can use many readily available implements and use your CA for other tasks. You can do away with the lift latches; however, best if you added a chain just behind and under the bell catch the hitch or implement should the snap couple release during use. The traction booster system works with the 3 PTH.
If you want pull a snap couple plow; you can make a 2 bottom one out of a 3 bottom plow by removing one bottom (the "outboard" share)
