Hi all. I'm new to the forum, and new to working on old tractors. I just picked up a 1955 Allis Chalmers CA. The motor was froze, so I had to remove the head. There is a part in there that is not listed in either of the service manuals I have. It looks like some sort of oil catch basin. It sits under the rocker arms against the top of the head and runs the length of the head. It has only one hole in the rear lowest part where it looks like oil would return through. I attached a picture of it. Can anyone tell me what this is and why its needed? Since its not in any manuals that I've found, I'm tempted to just leave it out.

That is a splash guard to keep oil away from the valve guides. Back then they didn't use stem seals. I've experienced tight exhaust valves after a head rebuild using stem seals. I'd use that, you don't often seen them still in engines. If I do have to use stem seals, I only put them on intake valves.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

there were a LOT of the motors built without the oil splash guard.. At one time , some thought the were on the stationary generator engines only... but a few have been found on tractors... WHY ?   Nobody knows.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I have three 'B's and only one has that splash guard.  All run just fine with or without.
