 Topic: C starts but won't run

I have a C that sat for a couple of years it starts runs for a second and dies. Than it won't start again for awhile (an hour?). Than it does the same thing again. I change the condenser, cleaned and gapped the points, the plugs look good and cleaned out the old gas. It acts like as soon as I release the starter switch it shut off. Thoughts? Thanks

Have you checked to see if there is spark after it stalls? That would be the first thing I would check.
Have you checked gas flow at the carburetor? Sometimes the sediment bowl inlet gets plugged up from debris from the tank over the years and restricts flow.

Sounds like your coil is bad... Got enough for an initial spark, then opens up inside... try a replacement.

Could also be a bad switch. Heavy key rings are the death of 'em. Do what WF owner says, test light and alligator clips are your friend...

Thanks guys I changed the coil and point to no avail. Checked the wiring for shorts and continuity, found nothing wrong. I now have it narrowed down to a gas delivery issue. I'll have to get a few small parts next time I'm in town and give it a go next week.

The next thing I would do is to remove the gas line from the carburetor, put a container under the gas line and turn the gas on. Leave the gas on for about a minute. You should have a real strong stream of gas, even after a minute. If you don't, work backward to find out where the restriction is.

a bowl full of gas should run 15- 20 seconds... Engine dies after a "second" seems odd to be gas flow ? .... possibly main jet plugged ?

How old is the gas in the tank? If it has any age on it I would drain it all out, float bowl too if possible. Put the old gas in your truck since it will blend out and put new gas in the tractor and get that out of the equation too.

Thanks for the advise guys. It was a plugged jet in the carburetor. Carburetors are sure not my strong suit but it run very good with plenty of power now.
