What is the purpose of the small hole between the
light and magneto switch?  Mine is converted to alternator
so nothing is stock, currently has a LED (non working) in
that hole. I can't see how they could have put a 1948 era
lamp in that little hole. I am suspicious that there should be
any kind of indicator lamp there.

Is there any sort of hi-res photo essay on the web for the C?

That is the screw hole to hole the Light switch bracket in place. The original switch would have had off low charge and high charge positions. The switch also had a fuse holder and resistor on it.
