 Topic: Buying a 5040

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a AC 5040 2WD with a loader and brush hog from a guy for $3,300. It looks to be in decent shape, but it has 2680 hrs on it, which seems high to me. Is that too many hours for this model or would it be a decent purchase? Would I need to rebuild the motor soon? It will be for my 10 acre 'hobby' farm, so it will not get a ton of use, but I don't want to be fixing it every time I want to use it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

That seems like a good price for that machine. Hours would not scare me. As alway's, owner care throughout it's life is your concern. If it was well kept/maintained/covered/ not abused, it's a bargain for sure. I do not know if you have access to a mechanic who has experience in farm machinery, pay him to spend some time "checking it out" so to speak, no guarantee, but at least you will have a good 2nd opinion.

bought mine with 4600 hours for 2500 and she still runnin strong only problem is if something is to go wrong with it parts can be hard to fins.

The ageless question is what do you see yourself doing with it? Regardless, I wouldn't buy a 50 series. The power-director "hand clutch" on a D-17 would work great for brush hogging and a D-17 would be something the next guy would want to buy from you. MHO

My 5040 is a ballsy little tractor blew snow with it and always spread poo with it in the summer. Like scott said there isnt really a desirability for these tractors so if you dont want it any more might be harder to sell unlike say a d series tractor.

I plan on mowing down pastures and black berries, digging fence post holes, moving firewood, maintaining gravel driveways, moving dirt around occasionally, and other general maintenance for my property. So what makes brush hogging with a 5040 harder? I grew up with a John Deere 650, it had a PTO engage lever and a 3 point height adjust lever and with the two of those you could operate the brush hog. Is this significantly harder and more complicated?

we had a 5040 in the late 70s did all of field work on 60 acre farm good little unit parts may hard to find the 50 series is the same as the white 2-60 field boss also have 5050 another good utility tractor

We have a 5045 that I bush hog and blow snow with and it works great- it has true live PTO(there is a PTO clutch lever to engage-disengage the PTO) , we used to have a 5040- if I remember correctly if you step on the clutch on the 5040 everything stops- PTO included, so maybe that is why a D series with hand clutch is nicer. The 50 series are good little tractors but weren't very popular, so parts maybe fun to find, but they are good on fuel.

5040 had a 2 stage clutch. My uncle has one it has been a decent little tractor. The 5050 was Fiat built and the 5040 was built by someone else. For all your doing probably last you a long time.

I have a 185 Allis, 6060 Allis, Model K gleaner, SMTA ferg 35, ferg 20 (paps first tractor, Allis B (wife's)John Deere 240 skid loader and a bunch of the usual farm stuff.

The first 5040 had a 2 stage clutch, foot clutch pedal operated transmission and pto clutch which gave you live pto, the latter 5040 had a seperate pto clutch lever which gave you indepent pto. Either one works good with bushhog. 5040 was built in Romania by UTB {Universal Tractor B____ }. Long sold the same tractor and more models. I have found a good parts supply on the web http://longparts.com/ the 5040 was the same as a 445 Long, so look up parts for a 445 Long for 5040 parts. I have a 5040 I use for tedding and raking hay, also pull sq baler, bushhog, pull 6' harrow for garden and food plots. Very good on fuel, rake hay all day on less than 5 gal.

Id skip the 5000 series , and either go back ...or go to the 6000 series .

The 6000 series would be overkill for what he wants and where is he gonna find one for under $4,000 with less than 3000 hours ?

I have a 5050 with a 400 loader, that I have owned for almost 30 years. Oter than rebuilding the starter, have only had routine maintenance. Has been a great tractor for my 10 acres thru the years, plenty of power, very reliable.

I paid $3000 for my 5040, it came with a 5' rotary mower, 20 disc harrow, 6' scrape blade, and a boom pole. It dosen't look near as good as the one in your pic. All I have done to it is changed oil and filters and run it. $3300 for tractor w/loader and mower sounds like a deal to me.

2860 Hours are high to you?? The tractor is over 30 years old, which means the tractor was used less than 100 hours a year. It is not uncommon to see 10 year old tractors with over 5000 hours now. The picture you posted looks as if the tractor is really clean. But as others have said, I would much rather have my D17 (8200 hours and still going strong).

I've got a 5040 with a 400 loader that I've had for 8 years and it has 3450 hours and I never have done anything to it but the starter and that was my fault good tractor and easy on fuel. Lyle

Sounds like a very good price for a 5040 with loader as long as everything works and sounds right. I bought my 5040 (no loader) for $4000 ten years ago. The 5040 does have a two stage clutch to help with mowing ect. It has been a good utility tractor. I had to rebuild the starter twice ($120) at local starter repair place, but mine sits outside and gets wet. 2680 hours on a 35 year old trator is that many, but there is always the unknown. But beats $25000 on a new Kabota. Let us know what you decide.

Id go and get it. We have a 5040 and a 5050 and both are great machines. Starters need to be rebuilt often but that not that big of a problem. Great on fuel. Easy to operate and for parts go to www.importtractorparts.com he has everything you will ever need for these model tractors. We use ours in a haying operation and they are both very reliable and cheap to operate.
