    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 at 11:24am
My 1939 B is a crank start only model. I have no desire to change that, but it does bug me that the crank handle basically rubs up against the nose sheet metal Everytime it is cranked over. I was wondering if anyone has done anything to protect the metal and the finish?

I have ordered a crank hole casting in brass that is originally for the model G and I am looking to fit it on to the B.

What are your thoughts? Anyone done this or something similar?

They came with a flat metal piece spot welded on the inside. Most of mine were wore thru by the time I bought the tractor. I like the idea of the G part being used.

Looks like a great idea. Make sure the crank for your B will fit thru it.

I, too, think it's a good idea. Mine is a little egged out from years of cranking.

I can get 1/2 in steel from work. I was going to cut out a plate to go on radiator mounting bracket to see if it help. That the problem on mine anyway that hole is worn way out oblong.

Got the bushing in today, crank handle fits fine. Will have to open up the hole some on each side to fit the oblong shape of the casting.

Today I opened up the crank opening on my Model B and fitted the brass Model G bushing to it. Fits pretty good, now need to cut s gasket to fit under it and find some mounting hardware. Think it's going to work pretty good.

Are you going to mount it on the outside or inside of the shell?

Just what I was going to ask. You could rivet in place with the fitting on the inside and it'd hardly be noticeable.

Inside mounting poses another set of issues, one, the lip of the expanded metal would be in the way. Mounting without the flange covering the opening would also require a lot of rework of the opening and a refinish of the shell. Since I am not sure of the color yet (know the brand), I do not want to venture into a repaint till maybe this fall. If I can identify the color, then I am going to rework some additional area of the shell including replacement of the mesh, and at that time If I could find a damaged Model G tail section and cut out the stamped area, it could be grafted into the B shell to mount it as is mounted on the G.

Paint it orange and it will only be noticed by those that claim to be correct police. When I was pulling and had to put the C in a line of show tractors to qualify for the pull I had a big time setting back and listen to the correct police wondering if Allis ever put a straight drawbar on a C.

A picture for those that had not seen it posted before.

Finished up installing the Model G brass crank hole flange and the B is now all buttoned back up. Works great, no more rubbing off the crank handle against the grill sheet metal. While I had the tin work off, touched up the black paint on the engine components and manifold. Instead of webbing between the metal joints, I used a heavy gauge clear mylar tape that I have used on the tin work of garden tractors with good results. Is heavy enough and has enough lubricity to prevent chaffing. I did use a piece of orange webbing under the hood/tank body strap.

Seeing this, I'm thinking of getting one....any my B doesn't even have a crank pulley that allows for the use of a crank.
