We have a trusty Agco Allis mower with the 16 horse Vanguard. A issue that started last year is still prevalent. Not always but sometimes you turn the key to start it and the starter spins but dosen't engage the flywheel. I have gone as far as tapping the starter with a rubber hammer thinking it would engage but nothing. I finally had to disconnect the battery to stop it!! Just need a new starter or any ideas? Thanks in advance, Ryan

the gear on the end of the starter is spring loaded and setting on a CORK SCREW shaft.. When you spin the starter, the gear flys OUTWARD toward the ring gear , screwing itself out on the CORK SCREW by centrifugal force.... Just pull the starter off and soak the end of the gear/ shaft with WD 40 or some thin oil and work it back and forth.. If the spring is OK, i might just need a good cleaning..

Try to look at the white plastic thing under the spring, with the spiral grooves for a "burr as well. if so take a knife and with care, cut it out.

Yes, clean battery terminals, clean starter as well! Shine them up, and don't forget to
be sure the battery is good.

I just re-read your post. So the starter spin, but not engaged, but why are you disconnecting the battery to stop it???? If you let go of the key, or button, this should stop? Might be a bad ignition switch, or crossed wires/short somewhere? Or maybe a bad solenoid. But not thinking so!

umm silly question but you do have the negative of the battery going to ground, +ve to the starter solenoid ??
