 Topic: Battery opinions?

I have a 2012 Dodge Durango with the original battery, going in to ND winter do you think I should replace it before real cold? Just would like others thought on this. I think good service out of a 10 year old battery.

I would have it load tested, new one may not be any better than the 10 year old OEM. I have a 2006 jeep that still has its original and going well. Batteries are available around me within a day, very expensive though for good ones. JMO

10 years is a good run. I guess it depends on if money is tight, and who drives it with the what possibility of getting stranded where.....I'd change it since you're thinking of it.

I had to replace 2 in the last week, both were 8 years old. My 2014 Silverado's original Delco died at work, I knew she was on the decline but pushed it a little to far. 790 CCA Deka at 149 bucks. 2 days later my 2005 2500 HD's Exide battery died in the garage with no warning, bought an 800 CCA Interstate for that one at 150 bucks, also 8 years old. When it rains it pours as they say.

Hang on to your skirts boys as replace the OE Batteries. New batteries 99% of manufactured are 'Recycled' lead from old batteries. Average lifespan on these is Just off Warranty time or close to five years.

I had a loose connection in my Round Baler's electric controls that would draw the batteries in my 7060 down if I forgot to unplug. I forgot and both batteries would not hold a charge. So that replacement was $300 and change. And since it has rained all summer I had time to find the loose connection in the relay! The batteries I replaced were 7 years old. Some batteries last longer than others in my experience.

Got 12 years out of the factory battery in my Dakota. Just kept a fully charged battery (from one of my old cars) in the tool box in the bed for 3 winters knowing it could die at anytime. One night after bowling it turned over slowly and then nothing. Jumped it with the spare battery, then I knew I got the most out of it. The replacement, a Mills Fleet Farm store brand (RoadRunner?) lasted 7 before that one needed to be replaced.
Aftermarket batteries are a gamble. The Advanced Auto "Silver" in my '59 Chevy is going on 14 years, knock on wood. 2 high end Oreilly's with 36 month free replacement in my '82 Lebaron lasted 2 years before they needed to be replaced. The 3rd one is 4 years old.

One of those 'pay me now, or pay me later' deals....but..it WILL fail you Murphy says...probably on a cold, windy, sleety night when you MUST go somewhere... Buy a new one, keep the old, inside a warm place on a maintainer. I'd actually see if you could add a 2nd battery into your ride,identical batteries with a solenoid to power starter from 2nd battery and first. I KNOW my AC forklift with BUDA BS153 loves the 2nd battery !

I would at least have a new one on hand. ---- this might be a super cold winter and even tho some of the good ones last 7 to 8 years, when they go,-- they usually go without warning. I always carry my jumper pack with me all the time!-- I dont trust the new ones either!

I bought a pickup 19 years ago that had a brand new Wal-Mart battery in it. Didn't think it would last long but I got ten years out of it. So...I bought another...its got nine years on it but noticed on cold mornings its a bit slow so I'm pretty sure it will die this winter. I've had decent luck with the better Napa batteries in other equipment. Had real good luck with the Napa commercial 6 volt batteries. I had two I've gotten eleven years out of them. I do try to give everything a charge every so often in the off season. Also try to keep them topped off with distilled h20 on the ones that aren't maintenance free. I have not had good luck at all with interstate batteries. Seems they leak horribly at the terminals and only last about 5 years. Just my two cents..

On my wife's, my daughter's and my g'daughter's vehicles I replace every 5 years and repurpose the old batteries to another use until they are used up. On my vehicles I swap out at 7 years. I buy my batteries from an independent dealer that only deals in batteries and know their stuff. I took in a battery out of our spare church van that I thought was shot but they charged it for 24 hours and it tested good and after 6 months still going. They are located out in the country and their main advertising is customer recommendations.

Watched a guy on YouTube test several batteries and the Wal Mart battery tested as good or better than most but at a far cheaper price. That's what I'm running now 800CCA Had it load tested after a year and it showed 811CCA. Time will tell.

I've been getting Motorcraft batteries the last several years. A little pricier, but a much better warranty than the run of the mill replacement brands. Have worked many wonderfuls. Just my opinion, others including yours may vary.

I don't know how you guys are getting that kind of time out of your batteries. I used to buy nothing but Interstate but they went downhill and the ones here don't have handles, Napa batteries are good but they don't have handles either, I have been buying Wal-Mart 5 year batteries, they will go the distance but not much more and they have a strap, very important when playing musical batteries. I had an 8D in my 11 that went 10 years, unheard of around here, that one I put a solar charger on, must have worked. The long and the short of it is I change batteries in the wife's car and the family car at 5 years and I feel as though I am flirting with a problem at that.

I hear ya Tad. Last Motorcraft I bought still had a good handle. They have been 8 year batteries. Trying to remember the wording of the warranty, but it's something like 5 year 100% replacement, then prorated the last 3? Maybe?

This is a scary subject for me. Every time I have a battery go bad here on the farm it turns into an epidemic.

That seems the story of my life as well.  But I do play musical batteries as well. But several things like the old Lincoln 200 welder only fits a smaller battery with the posts the one way. I have yet to get so lucky as to see a 10 year old battery that worked. I think tractors and even more so a crawler like my HD 5 vibrate the heck out of them and they don't last as good.
When Kragon Auto parts was the big new in town chain and had $30 batteries advertised for 5 years, the warranty always got made out to my pickup and I put the paper where I could find them. Since I moved the dang things anyway from tractor to truck or what ever even the prorated part on the last 3 years made them a good deal.

I have been really lucky I guess. A fairly close neighbor owns the interstate district here and is a terrific guy. He gives me/or anybody really “good” load checked batteries that are returns if he has the size I need at the time in return for any core. Have gotten lots of service from others premature returned cores. He also generally keeps a pretty good stock of seconds which I have been satisfied with for a very low cost.

I've had great success with Motorcraft batteries. First battery lasted about 12 years. Second battery is now about 6 years old. No problems with either.

Update, I replaced my battery, went with an Interstate because that is what local dealer sells, have gotten many from him and had good luck, hopefully with this one too.
