Hey,
Just as the title states. Sorry if you popped in here expecting to see a backhoe on a B. But I am just wondering if anyone has converted a B to 3-point and then hung a backhoe on it. I am likely going to get the 3-pt conversion kit for my B so I can use modern drags/blades for leveling off my property. But the idea of also having a backhoe hung back there has been in my head.
Is it doable? or should I just use the B for its intended usage and get a newer tractor for landscaping projects?

The B is very small. I doubt you would be happy with any backhoe on it.. At work we had a backhoe on a 40 HP farm tractor.. Tore the crap out of the hoe and 3 point... I ended up buying a tractor with the hoe mounted to it..
At home we have a CASE 530 - 40 HP backhoe loader.. The hoe is SOLID MOUNT onto the tractor FRAME.. not a 3 point.
I use a B with a 3 point and have a blade, dirt scoop, plow, small disc and pull wagon, etc.

I would think the front end would be to light with the weight of a hoe on the back. Maybe a small one that dug 4 ft like you would put on a small Kubota would be all right but what about running the hydraulics? The B's 2 piston pump would never supply enough oil.

This past summer I bought a small towable back-hoe. Works nice for small jobs.

A B is about the last tractor I would ever think about mounting a backhoe on. The B is good for light and small jobs and does not have what is needed to operate a backhoe.
If you are going to be doing a lot of digging, get a little Kubota with a front end loader and backhoe already attached OR do what I did, buy an older Case 580D Construction King from the 1980s - a cheaper and much stronger machine. They were the Cadillac in their day and will do far more than any 3 point hitch mounted backhoe. Good ones can still be found if you look. Don't buy the cheapest one you find!

Jeff... I own two Bs, and I have a backhoe attachment that I use on my D17.
The hoe attachment was originally for chassis mounting to an '80's era New Holland or mid-size Ford with high-volume/low pressure live hydraulics.
I MADE the mount to adapt the hoe to my D17. I use a PTO pump hanging off the back of the 17, and mounted a hyd reservoir ON the hoe chassis, and the chassis has sockets that the 3-point on my17 (also homemade) uses to LIFT the unit up onto the 17. Once lifted, I install pins to rigidly secure it to the 17.
My hoe reaches straight down 5 feet, and has about a 14" bucket.
Like the others, I would NOT under ANY circumstances, consider the B for a backhoe. It is a stressed-member design (torque tube and engine bear all chassis reaction loads), is naturally high sitting, and has very little front end weight.
The hoe I have, from a working perspective, is very limited...it has very little digging power, needs to be right atop it's work-spot to be effective, and even with outriggers down, bounces the 17 hard. I use my hoe for doing things I'd rather not do with a hand-shovel, but when I REALLY need to dig, I rent a tracked mini-ex for up-close work, and call in a neighbor with a big machine for the rest.
If I were planning on doing lots of backhoe work, I'd follow Steve's thought...my choice would the 580D with Extend-a-hoe... just because I've used many, and they're a well-integrated machine, and very effective tool.

The B is really small, that's true...I don't think you're gonna be satisfied with any backhoe on it. You can have some problems with the weight of machine in general after you install the backhoe. So, I'd recommend to find another way to upgrade your machine. If you need backhoe, it's better to get 715B backhoe-loader. When I worked for a paving company last year, this loader was one of the best to work with. My colleagues were also satisfied with its features. But again, if you wanna have a backhoe on Allis B, that's your choice.

Jeff, As you are aware I love the B but NOT FOR A BACKHOE My son has a JD 1025 with a front end loader. Works GREAT. The B is definitely not made for a backhoe. I even caution anyone about putting a loader on the B. Just not made for them Take good care of my favorite Good Luck! Bill Long

We took a Massey Ferguson backhoe that had a large frame that mounted up under the MF tractor belly. We cut the Frame up and made it a pull style with an axle and wheels under it. Then installed a engine and hydraulic pump and tank on the backhoe trailer. Sounds odd, but it works great and it could be used behind your B, I’ve used it a bunch behind my CA. The hoe has downriggers on it, and the large trailer frame and down riggers take all the stress. We have used it behind a 1200 lb kubota and it works good. Better behind the heavier CA. It’s not ideal in all situations, but so far for our use, it has done everything we needed it for.

Depends on your skill level, at fabbing something. As others have said, no frame, no 3 point, no hyd pump, it would be a lot of work, for little return, when you can buy one for a more modern tractor, or a tow behind or self propelled backhoe for $3k or so...

For a backhoe to be effective, it takes weight and hydraulic power. We have a lot of rock in our ground and little backhoes such as mini ex’s, Kabota’s, John Deere large lawn tractors and few others have tried for some basic tasks I have had. They all have failed when I got below the topsoil so I bought an older Cat 416 made in the late 80’s. It will dig anything. Recommend what ever you choose to make sure you can get parts nearby. All—and as I was told, “Every man should have one”!

I agree with everything said, you cannot put a normal sized backhoe on a B. However, Case (and later Ingersoll) made little mini backhoes that are smaller and lighter than a B, and they work good. I have the loader version, but not the backhoe. It's a good machine. But there are reasons they don't make them anymore. Mini-excavators and Dingo type loaders and tiny skid steers have made them obsolete. And they were only ever valid for places a real backhoe couldn't fit, which is an advantage the B mostly loses with it's bigger size. All that said, if I were determined to do it, I would rotate the final drives to lower the B (like a Cub Loboy). And build a complete exterior channel iron frame like you see on a lot of old backhoes and loaders made from ordinary tractors. And probably add lots of weight to the front. And that all hinges on being able to find a miniature backhoe setup, which are not common.
