my poor neglected B1 has been sitting so long without a battery that I cannot remember if it's pos or neg ground. I may have bought a wrong battery for it, cuz the cables would fit easily with the angular posts nearest the seat, but in that configuration the + post is where the ground cable would hook up. I can use this new battery elsewhere, and also I can realign the cables if needed but...

Originally it was 6v positive ground if you convert it to 12v it's best to switch to negative ground. Standard alternators are negative ground cheep and easy to get.

yeah, Dave, the starter/gen is 12v so the conversion must have happened. I'm 95% sure the ground was switched to neg ground same time. any way to check that with a meter or whatever?
and if I just try it and it's wrong, will I wreck anything?

Check the ignition coil connections if it has battery ignition. + on the coil goes to the points for positive ground, to the ignition switch for negative ground. Won't help if its magneto ignition. The battery posts and connectors are different diameters for positive and negative posts to give you a hint of which goes where.
If it has sat a while it is important to flash the generator after connecting the battery and before starting the tractor to get the generator to generate polarity to match the battery. Not necessary with an alternator, but the polarity has to match or the alternator will be fried. Positive ground alternators are very rare.

if I remember right - momentary contact direct from battery... but neg to where and pos to where?

I also have a B, but the one that was in question is the little guy. the B is 6v pos very original.

Sorry I didn't see the 1 behind the B. B! is a negative ground 12 volt it should have lug ends on the cables and use a slightly smaller battery. at least my simplicity landlord does. you could stuff a car battery in it but the hold down is designed for a garden tractor battery. The starter generator probably wouldn't take kindly to the battery hooked up backwards. I had a heck of a time getting a new regulator for mine.

yeah, Dave - I am sticking to the little battery that fits so nicely. also all new rubber all around, so the little puppy should be real happy and eager to go. thinking about adding in an ammeter, in fact probably will since I have a couple just laying around. I dislike dead batteries almost as much as flat tires.

Those starter generators WILL release the special smoke if they aren't properly polarized. Brother hired a guy to replace the one in his Cub Cadet once. The smoke came out less than 10 minutes after starting and the guy claimed it MUST have been defective. That's how we found out he didn't know squat about starter generators. That was about 1980 , when a $100 for another new genny hurt!
