Well, today I got the 16 year old (girl) to drive the B.  She was enjoying herself and doing fine until....she put it into 2nd gear, with some difficulty, and it stalled when she released the clutch.  Restart, shifter in neutral, release clutch and it goes!  We were able to finish what we were doing and after tinkering with it a bit it seems that if the shifter is in neutral it is really in first gear.  If the shifter is in any of the normal gear positions everything locks up and the tractor stalls.

My unresearched and generic guess is that somehow the shifter is disconnected from whatever mechanism changes gears.  What is the likely problem?  Is this likely to be a relatively easy fix?
The B has an appointment with a hayrake and a tedder as soon as we get some sunny weather here in CT.  Any observations, advice, assistance greatly appreciated.

There is a ball socket on the end of the shifter. THE round plate ont he right side with the 4 counter sunk screws holds the shift forks. YOu need to take the cover off and align the slides again and put the forks back in the slots... Check things out to see what is worn to cause it to jump out.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Try removing the shift lever, with a good light look down the hole and with a large screw driver or a small pry bar you should be able to move the fork gate into neutral, and then replace the shift lever.

Good luck,

I tried to remove the shifter but after fiddling with the snap ring for awhile decided to take the access cover off the side of the transmission.
It was straightforward to take the cover off.  Aside from the ball on the end of the shifter, I did not notice any unusual wear considering it's a 70 year old tractor.  First gear slid into neutral and the forks lined right up as it went together.  Test drive no problem, we'll see how long until it happens again.
Is there a way to fix the ball on the shifter or am I better off replacing it?

Thanks again Steve and Dusty!

Sounds like you have it repaired.  We had very little problem with the B-C transmission.  Probably jumped out of gear and with you fixing it and with good luck may last another few years.
Take good care of my favorite.
Good Luck!

Usually a seasoned standard transmission operator doesn't have a problem with a worn shifter ball socket, because they have the shifter to the end of the gate before they move it toward the gear they want. You will get by with it for many years. If your daughter isn't carefull though, it will happen again. I would build it up some or replace the shifter, unless you don't mind reseting it, once in a while.

not common for the B-C transmission, but has happened on larger tractors. Most guys buildup the ball with weld or replace the entire rod... LIke mentioned, i would guess the girl is somewhat inexperienced in shift pattern, but that does not excuse a flaw.
