i'm looking for a 2nd tractor to operate while i work on my CA and vice versa.
maybe i've been reading too many Bill Long posts... but right now it seems to me a B is my prime target, based on size, availability, price & features.
but i am very new to tractors and really can't make an informed choice.
i'm looking for something smaller than the CA for light duty stuff on flat ground... maybe even just to use to pull small trailers or wagons.
i don't need to pay premium for rarity since i'm not really a collector at this point, just want something orange and servicable.
down here in southern california i seem to be able to find "looks good, runs good" B's for around $2K & up... but buying an already restored tractor seems to me a little like hiring somebody to eat ice cream for me.  and i gather G's are more of a collectors' item.
from what i've read from various parts of the country i'm aiming for something in the $500 range that needs some mechanical improvement and likely a lot of cosmetic help.
am i dreaming?
all advice from this knowledgable forum welcome and heeded.

btw very new but very orange.  non AC not considered.

Sounds like you need a B. Have to watch for em and sometime one will pop up. I see them advertized all the time for 12 to 22 hundred with a spray can restore and a belly mower. don't see em sell much that way. Now days tires add a considerable amount to the equation. Rims I guess always have also. Mechanical fixes are pretty cheap if you can do most of the work yourself. Good luck lookin.

yep, thanks charlie.  already facing sticker shock for tires for the CA, but fortunately rims are in excellent shape.  i got very lucky with my "gotta have it now - no clue of comparative prices" purchase of the CA... now proceeding with some caution on the next buy.  and ohhhh yes planning on doing all reasonable repairs myself.  no machining tools but have done my share of auto fixits including complete engine overhauls (one on my 1959 aston martin with minimum specs reference... but a super mechanic living right next door).  so glad to have you and a few others "next door" via this forum.
i'm going to the southern california equivalent of your antique farm equipment organization (in Vista) for their annual event in a week or so, so will likely be able to see & touch a B there and will put out the word i'm looking. my fantasy is that someone will donate one to the museum, which they will sell to me and put the money to good use.
that would definitely be a win/win deal.

CAdon,  Hope you find one cause I know you will give it a good home.
You know how I love the B but just remember that with the CA you have a little more power and - if your hand clutch works - a live pto.  For mowing that is a great extra.
Let us know how it goes with your search.  I have to say B's are kind of like peanuts and grow on you very easily.
Good Luck!
Bill Long
