I’m amazed at battery prices these days. I need a couple 6 volt and a few 12 volt.
I’ve found very little time for my neglected old tractors the last few years
I plan to only keep a couple.
It’s getting hard to keep them all maintained.

I've got a $300 'fancy,funny red' battery in my D-14. it was a freebie cause it wouldn't power the kid's stereo....

It's all about sales volume. back in October I brought 4 commercial class Group 31 stud top batteries for my Astro and only paid what the price would have been at the time for a 6 volt tractor battery. The store rarely sells any 6 volt batteries any more and sells the group 31s by the pallet. Just like fuel prices, as long as OPEC controls the crude oil market, we'll have high fuel prices.

I put new batteries in my diesel pickup every few years the takeouts are still good and go to a tractor till there no good. It dosent take much of a battery to start the older tractors. I've got 10 to 15 year old Optimuas in my tractors they'll need to be changed soon I had to put the jump box on the other day the Wd45 wouldn't start at 10 deg Fahrenheit without help. If it's below 0 they all need to be plugged in or they won't start. The last set of optima's I bought were $600.

Bought some batteries last fall for a D17 and the D-15 , yes expensive to say the least. Brought them in the garage around Thanksgiving and keep them on the maintainer. Between the rv ,tractors, lawnmower. I keep about 6 or 7 batteries warm and charged. Can't imagine how big collectors keep there batteries in good shape. I worked for an older farmer who had about 20 tractors he used . Problem was he only had a few batteries.

This is where having a magneto instead of distributor pays off vs risk/effort crank starting tractor.

The one I’m keeping are crank start and one on tracks so no tires to keep up with either.

At the farm the three tractors and the payloader sit inside the heated shop. The combines and the articulating tractors we remove the batteries and shelf in the shop. Every thing else has batteries and parked where we can get an extension cord to them if needed.

anymore I buy the 2 year free replacementbatteries. can't plug in the battery maintainers outside anymore, and usually withing a year the batteries are dead and unchargeable, yeah...kinda a pain to replace then each year, but I don't hafta buy new ones each year anymore.
