I'm sure this is a question that's been covered before but I couldn't find it off the bat.
My D17 s4 has a pto leak and before I fix it, I need to use it! So I thought I'd top off the fluid, but am not 100% sure if best to use ATF or hydraulic. Pros and cons to each. (Isn't the reservoir shared?) Thoughts? |

ATF is too thin. Use hydraulic fluid

821 spec is nice, but not a requirement for a D series........... any economy UTF is OK.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I was under the impression that the D-17 Series IV had basically the same hydraulic system as the 170 and did require the 821 spec oil. Am I wrong? |

Is it leaking out the rear around the PTO? If so, that reservoir is not shared with the hydraulics. The Power director and hydraulics share oil but the trans and rear end is separate. Having said that you should fill both reservoirs with 821 oil.

Thread discussion is perfect as I’m about to change fluids on my D17 IV but I wanted to verify a couple of things. Per the operators manual:
Power director and hydraulics - type A auto trans fluid Transmission and rear gears - SAE 80 transmission fluid Considering the quality of modern day fluids, the appropriate fluid to replace BOTH is universal hydraulic fluid (821 spec)? Edited by Mosin9130 - 29 Sep 2019 at 8:43pm |
