Here is a site with some AC history in many different fields , I was reading on the 2nd page on the AC generators and turbines used back in early 1900's that supplied power for copper mining in AZ . Some great history on this ASME site .
Look through the site to see some of the other engineering marvels of design including the baked dirt scoop.
