why would I occasionally get a message from Norton that a program, usually Edge is requesting/attempting to access the camera? This while I am not doing anything that would include or require a camera.
I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Can't answer your question Lou, but the same thing happened to me a year or so ago. Now my camera eye is covered with a piece of black electrical tape. Let em try to see what I'm doing.

I don't need the tape, my computer has a little 'slide button' with which I can cover the camera lens...................

Lou ,just because YOU aren't using the camera does not mean someone else ISN'T ! It's getting easier and easier for others to HACK into your computer, especially when you add 'aps' and 'free' things off the Infernalnet.
Virtually every 'free' ap  or program is a dataminer, a program that collects and sends YOUR personal data back to 'someone'. 4-5 years ago CBC Marketplace showed how EASY it was to get pictures, GPS data, account info from socalled 'smart devices'.
Now you 'should' be able to 'configure' your camera and other devices (microphone, HD, etc.) to NOT be enabled or have the 'browser' access them. BY 'default', they have 24/7 access to YOUR computer and data..nice eh !!!
In Mozilla Firefox(the browser I use) , it's under Options/Permissions/...
EDGE better have a similar 'option', if not, delete it from your puter, install Firefox.
After 5 decades of 'playing with PCs' , I've learned a few things.....

I pretty much knew the answer as I was asking the question, but thought maybe there might be a legitimate reason. I have always kept my camera covered, like Bob, black electricians tape!

Well you guys worry about apps , but micro-soft said they was going to give mymain computer and a vaccine injection some 3 weeks ago... and they did not give us a place to cancel it but extend it out for about 3 weeks and last night they gave it their covid shot and  and when we went to wake it up from thier 'injection ' of computer covid crap, it died on us...   So now we are back to the old computor that is outdated and no support.   Why couldn't they just left us alone and not come sneaking in and giving the puter a serious updating anema??? If we ever get it fixed, I am thinking I should send a repair bill to those bas-tards. Microsoft covid anemia disease....  and tell them it is just a covid refund that they owe us...

Well,,JC,,,,first of all,,,I DID NOT send em your way,,,!!!WinkWink
For bout 4-5 years and after 2 failed PC's ,,,Microsoft finally left me alone. fact is their techs gave me the MS "do not give out" number as after every friggin UPDATE they did I would have to contact them to get my PC back running again. I would start getting their messages 3-4 weeks ahead and I would just keep moving the "scheduled date" farther and farther back til they would just go ahead and start their friggin Updates. I threatened to take them to court and I was told ,,,Quite Forceably that MicroSoft Owned the software and that I HAD agreed to allow them to do these updates to THEIR software!!!! So,,I guess they DO got you by the ying yang,,,GOOD Luck,,,,,!!

while yes, they own the software...
no...you do NOT have to agree to their updates

I've been in this gig ,since almost day one. Back then updates came on a piece of paper(monthly) and you had to edit/save the changes onto a floppy disk
I prefer the good old days.....

to BLOCK them from updating, simply use google 'block win10 updates', or similar.
I just checked and my hybrid 10/7 machine, I allow to DOWNLOAD the updates but NOT install them. That's the option I chose. I can selectively update any of the 'patches' WHEN I choose to, AFTER I read about what it does......
I have a w98SE PC in the basement, it happily runs 100%, on the net, email, etc, never been updated in 20+ years ? Heck I've got DOS6.22 on some, they work fine.....

Yeah, they don't tell you what the 'updates' are all about so you have to find out the hard way.  Then you can go look (search) to see what they are and if you even want them.  99% of the time it's for crap that isn't even on our PCs.

Jay, thanks for the idea of the google search.  I've just been pushing the updates back as often as possible until like Joe says, they shove em down our throats.

JC, call Joe and get that phone # from him!!!

Reminds me, I've gotta do a backup....
