I went to a local farm sale a week ago. I brought home a nice one owner Ford grain truck, and a D-17. The guy bought the D-17 new when be started farming in 1961. Never sat out, very straight and clean tractor. It starts and runs excellent, but has a little blue smoke. He said it burns a quart of oil a day. I appreciate guys that took good care of the tools they used to earn their living.

Both of your purchases look like nice machines, also looks like it must have been a chilly day. How many hours on the D17 and miles on the truck?
Wait a minute! What's that yellow wheel behind the truck? Shameless, get the rope!!! Edited by JohnCO - 14 Jan 2018 at 8:11pm |

Now that you mention it, I see a strip of green above the box too.

Excellent equipment! All this talk about those hints of yellow and green... due tell. I know the peanut gallery won’t let me hear the end of it, but I’m a JD fan as well.
Congratulations on your purchases! -Chris |

Hi John - around 4700 hrs on the tractor, and 60k on the truck. He still had the original owners manuals for both. |

Burning a quart of oil a day it probably is in need of rings, possibly sleeves, and pistons too. Maybe rod bearings too.

Gentlemen, When we stopped selling in 1962 was I too early for the D-17 Series 2?
When did the Series 2 come out and how do you tell it is a Series 2. Thanks in advance. Good Luck! Bill Long ps: By the way they are good looking units. Congratulations!! Edited by Bill Long - 15 Jan 2018 at 3:55pm |

Olivetroad, That is a great equipment story. Thanks for sharing. Congrats on purchasing an original - one owner AC D-17 series II & loader.
When I was a kid, I used a similar setup to load cow manure into manure spreader. Upon getting a heaping bucket load, the D-17's rear-end weights helped it traction away from slick manure pile. Which engine is in the Ford Grain truck? 300 inline 6? Does it hold 350 bushel? Edited by AC7060IL - 15 Jan 2018 at 4:36pm |

This is a chart I made up for the changes in the D17 from Series I & II (retro-designated) through the Series IV. If anyone has additions or corrections, let me know. gatz ![]() |

Some great acquisitions, David. Those Ford trucks were tough.
I like how this guy took care of the thread-bare bill on his cap; no fashionista he.
