     We were having a lot of fun yesterday here in e. central IL., with family and friends out to watch the ol' man working his 1948 Wood Bros. picker that we just got working. I don't think it was really designed for the yields nowadays, and even in low gear we had to stop occasionally to let it clear itself out. My grandfather had a 2-row Ford picker mounted on his WD, that I can still remember him using, but this was first time of actually picking myself.  I have to admit that I was  "scratching my head" at all the excitement the ol' man was having when he found this thing, and his repeated quote of...( by God, I'm going to pick corn again before I die! )...I guess we checked another one off his bucket list yesterday!  Too bad he didn't remember how his mother taught him to share...I thought we were going to have to start throwing corn at him to give us a turn at it!  I was especially glad to see my grandaughters there to watch all this too...except for the part of us big kids fighting over who gets to play with it next! lol
      Never pass up a chance to make memories like these...

That's the way with us old guys.  We know it's closer to the end than the beginning, so we want to go back as much as we can....  We had a Woods picker, but pulled it with an F20 Farmall.  Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for posting pics. Love to see orange at work.We used a New Idea 2 row pull behind picker with a wagon just like that one.My brother and I would argue over who "HAD" to pick corn.Now we would argue over who would "GET" to pick corn.

We pulled our Woods picker with an 8N Ford.

     I managed to get us an original operator's manual for the picker, (which was a big help), and it had an 8N pulling it on the front cover.  Our 45 wasn't showing much strain during this exercise...lol, but the hand clutch and p/s were sure nice to work with.

       You would never get me off of the picker either. That is one of my/our next purchases. Good clean straight ones with no rot are really rare around here .

Neighbor has a New Idea 323 he wants to sell, my dad wants me to buy it. I still have a crib, but hard to justify it when I am already tight on storage.

I have a 185 Allis, 6060 Allis, Model K gleaner, SMTA ferg 35, ferg 20 (paps first tractor, Allis B (wife's)John Deere 240 skid loader and a bunch of the usual farm stuff.

If your picker was originally red, it is a Woods Dearborn. That would be post war after Ford Dearborn bought out Wood Brothers,1947 I think. That's why there is a Ford tractor on the manual. The manual was redone after Ford bought the company.
 I have a Wood Brothers picker that was originally gray, which would be pre Ford. Not much is different.  Ford even took all the ruuning gear off and made a 3 point hitch version with the same parts. I also have a manual and a copy of the original assembly instructions.
 180 bushel corn will go through if you slip the hand clutch a lot on the 45. BTDT I had fun with mine twice last year. I picked the 2009 crop off in March


and picked the 2010 crop off in October.

i remember running the d19 with a new idea mounted sheller, that was in 83 -86 it is a wonder more fingers and toes wernt lost, and a dirty job as well, but it beat the alternative method, nice pics and your daghters wont forget them
