Headed out to a auction today. and one of the items is a 1 row Allis pull behind picker. Cant find a lot about them. Seen a YouTube video of a WD45, this picker and a Allis wagon.
So what are they worth and does anyone collect them? Seen rough values from a S100 to under $2000.
No I don't need a corn picker!

Also was a Allis running gear under a old (non Allis) galvanized gravity box. Perfect combo for the picker!:)
Regards,
 Chris

Is there is enough old stuff at this auction that it will draw collectors? If not, the picker may well sell for scrap prices. Look it over carefully. If the chains are rusted out or worn out you may end up putting a lot of $$ into it if you were to restore it.

Think how long it would take without a picker, one ear at a time.  LOL

Bought my first  worn out #7 New Idea picker in the early 80's, I had about 6 acres of corn to pick. My Dad raised he** about spending $75.oo when I could have husked it out by hand "like we did when I was a kid"! I have several husking pins but I prefer the Picker, Good Luck Chris not many of them left...Harvey

Folks,
Thanks for the comments!
I did not bid on either the picker or the wagon.
Here's the final numbers:
The picker which was in VERY good shape went for around $250.
The running gear and gravity box, again in very good shape, went for around $950.
I may have some pictures coming.
Regards,
 Chris

We used an old Dearborn/Woods one-row picker. That was more than enough when it was coupled with an Armstrong unloader.

I wanted one of those pickers for awhile. Almost bought a really good one for about $1000. The more I thought about the more I thought I'd rather have a new idea. I don't think the allis picked clean at all. And probably can't get any parts.

Grandma talks about hand picking when she was a kid. Said after school her, her brother, and dad would go out to pick. Her Dad took 2 rows and her and her brother each took one. I told her they must not have been very good. ;)
They threw the ears into the horse drawn wagon. Dad gave voice command to the horse as they went.

So the $250 was a good buy. IF you wanted one! Most folks standing around it said they were a snapper not a husker! and if the stalks were damp all the husks stayed on. My neighbor bid to $200. He is a Allis guy and didn't want to see it go to cheap. I think he wishes he would have bid more?
There was a pretty nice Farmall M that went for $1900.
And a little Farmall cub/ lowboy (offset) square grill, with a IH belly mower, that went for $4000!
I need to load up some pictures of the little Allis C that is about 10 miles from me.
Regards,
 Chris

I'd think 250 is really good. I can't find a 1 row 323 new idea for under 2000.
The allis would be more for show than useful. The pictures I saw about 75% of the corn was husked. I bet it do poor in 175 bu corn. But I think there's so cute behind a WD.

I picked 1 acre at a time. Back then corn was not ready to harvest in September. It was ready when the ground was frozen, December or January.  If the ground was not frozen, February would work too.
Dad always said," If you have one boy, you have a man. If you have two boys, you have two boys". "ALLIS EXPRESS"

As a kid in the 50's, I 've opened fields by hand and we had two pickers, a Woods and an International, both one rows. One picked good in the morning and the other in the afternoon, but I can't remember which was which anymore.

My uncle had a new Idea #7 back in the 1950's he and my dad shared. Was a good picker for the day.
When dad bought a bigger farm in 1952 and moved about 3 hours from uncle dad bought a Allis one row that was not a husking picker. It worked fine and dad liked the husk on any way as said made the grain better for the cows when the husk were ground with the corn and oats. Round about 1955 day bought a used mounted picker and installed it on his WC similar to this one

He used it till in the mid 1960's.

I bought a Massey Harris # 5 for $5.00. This was at a auction away from farming country and they could not even get a bid on it.

Our Woods tended to husk better if the stalks were damp.

It was one way or the other (don't remember)but following Doug's info our Woods did better in the morning and uncles mounted 2 row AC did better in the afternoon.
