First of all, thanks to the folks who have helped me out over the last couple months... I appreciate the effort and thanks as well for your patience...
Here is the deal, as I understand it, with this AC-G: engine is more or less properly timed. Distributor points and condenser are new and set. plugs are good, new wiring to all attachments, new engine coil and starter is rebuilt and running well. air cleaner is properly sealed and there is no longer a back-draft (valves seems to be in good shape). Carburetor has been cleaned, but original gasket is missing (just ordered a re-build kit), fuel filter and line are clear... SO I can start this tractor without a tremendous amount of difficulty but it putters out, ESPECIALLY when you give it throttle: it dies. Today I drove it around the barnyard in second gear, tried to put it into third and it sputtered out. After that the tractor would not idle long without sputtering out. We pulled off the carb and checked the floats and then cleaned the main jet. Gas is moving through the carb obviously since we can start it up and sometimes drive it. As I mentioned above the carbs original gasket (the "bowl gasket") was destroyed and replaced with a gasket fitted around the margins.. I am assuming that this is the problem but not sure.. would this cause a problem when the throttle is open? Okay, enough for now. Thanks! |

I'm a simpleton about these things but one thing I've discovered about G's is that the fuel line from gas tank to carb is prone to plugging. On one of my Gs it was so plugged that i couldn't even blow compressed air through it. I reamed it out with a small wire, used lots of carb cleaner, and it cleared up my problem nicely.
Good luck
Dick

A bad gasket or one covering something that isn't supposed to be covered might cause your problem but it sure sounds like a fuel starvation problem to me. A partially plugged fuel line or crud in the bottom of the tank or in the sediment screen can let fuel through enough to run at an idle or more but cause starvation if the engine is under a load or running at a higher rpm. If you can choke it some to keep it running, I would say check out the fuel system from tank to carb.

I'll second the 'fuel starvation' answer,ha dthe same problem. I took the tank of my '53 dropped a light into it and saw a LOT of 'crud' on the bottom,so I spent 2 hours cleaning it really, really good. Then used new 3/8" 'rubber' gas line from tank to carb.Runs a LOT better.Yes, it ain't 'correct' but runs nice. If you don't like my fix, buy my G and do it 'correct'.lol

Just a thought for ya...
When you say it is "more or less" properly timed, how much more or less? I bought one last month that had been sitting for while. After cleaning out the tank and carb, I got it running. It would start and run ok, but I couldn't put a load on it. I could drive it around by feathering the clutch to get it moving, but it would die under any significant load. I checked the timing with a timing light and found the timing was retarded 15-20 degs. After bringing it back to specs it had plenty of power.

I had similar problems with mine. Found two problems that caused it. First, it was a tank of old gas that had plenty of water in it. Second, the fuel shut off valve wasn't opened all the way.

If a G is running as you describe it is usually gas. 1 Check the gas line 2 check the tank for junk 3 after this check the gas flow at the carb then re clean the carb. M
Lot of work but the root cause of most problems like you describe. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck! Bill Long |
