Thinking of turning my 6 volt  G into a 12 volt.  I have a hard time starting it I any weather.   Or  getting an  electronic ignition  for it if I can. Not sure how to change it to 12 volt. What's involved and what needs to be changed? Any one do either to yours,  and where you happy with the change?

I've had 3 Gs, all were 6 volt and never had a problem starting. Usual causes for 'hard starting' are 1) wrong battery cables, 2) bad battery 3) corroded points, 4) weak coil 5) aging starter,

6 volt systems need FAT, NEW battery cables
6 volt batteries need 'tending too' monthly
points corrode so weak spark..won't start
coils age over time, less spark,= hard starting
the starter..probably needs a COMPLETE rebuild

If you step back and think about it, the G engine is less than 10HP so it'd shouldn't take much to spin it. The problem is after 50-60 years, well things are a tad worn. After I rebuilt starter, all new wires, ignition parts an dbattery  my G would start every time..just like new.

EI will not cure a bad starter( worn bearings) and if not installed right, poof, all the magic smoke comes out...expensive smoke....

Now going 12volt has advantages, like easy LEDs, 12V winch, addon hydraulics, etc. and if you use a small Denso alternator no trimming of the tinwork is invovled.

It depends on what you're using the G for. Real farm use 6V is fine, shows ? well 6V IS original...'toy' use..then maybe convert to 12v.
I'm sure others will chime in....
Just some point to ponder...

Battery posts often need cleaning. In my long experience 6 volt battery posts and connectors need to be cleaned (with brush or knife) twice a year. 12 volt can go a couple years before cleaning just because the oxidized post voltage drop is a smaller fraction of the battery voltage.

For starters, just install a 12 volt battery to crank it over. If you have a mag, no problem. If you have a distributor, then you need a new 12 volt coil to go with it. Might as well switch the wires to get NEGATIVE ground also. Don't connect the generator wires, just leave them off. See how it starts and runs. IF you like it, then you need to install a 12 v generator OR Alternator to keep the battery charged. If you use  it seldom, the battery will hold charge for a long time without recharging it... Just put a battery charger on when you park.  Several small alternators can be mounted on an Allis. I have don't several on the "B", never a "G" ....... new brackets and a few wires . If you decide to install one, many here can supply drawing and advice.......

For a good test, just install the 12 volt battery and disconnect the old gen wires.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

We offer a complete 12V kit for the little G. Also, if you want to keep the 6V I also rebuild the Starter motors. We also keep in stock the E.I. kits. 6VPG, 12VPG, or 12VNG.  With an Alternator you'll want to move to 12V Neg. Grd.  Take a visit to our website. Lottsa' info on 12V systems, and pics of our 12V G.  Be happy to help you out with any questions.

I bit the bullet a few years ago and bought a 6 volt Gates sealed battery.  Not called Gates anymore but can't remember the name.  Cost around $150 but still working well and old acid types last a year for me.

I used Gates SLA batteries 30 years ago for my remote energy control systems. Figured if they were good enough for USA subs, they gotta be good enough for me. BTW 2 of them would start an original Mini !
I've got one of them 'designer' batteries in Troy. The red one that looks like 6 tubes molded togther. Hay it's a $300 battery for free...kid couldn't power his truck AND stereo with it....

"You just gota love" these sites. Any question you ask can be answered. THANK YOU ALL. When I got the tractor I had the generator and the starter rebuilt, also a new carb. I've done that with the 2 Allis Chalmers I have. It seems to help take care of a lot of problems. I do use it for work. I have a snow plow for it as well as a woods mower deck (Which I'm working on getting it up and running, if any one knows much on them) Also all the things needed for food plots. I'm going to do all the suggestions given to me. And I thank all of you for your help. I've taken in to account our present temps. -28 the other morning and yesterday a heat wave of -13, today it was down to -23 at 2AM. I just thought I'd throw that out there for you in the south.
Again, Thank You!!!!!!!!!

dang that's cool...
hmm, what oil's in the G ?
If it's straight 30 (SAE30) that's too thick, you'll need a lighter oil or keep in aheated garage !
My D-14 'complained' the other day...

Brad, I'm all the way down in La Crosse, almost 170 miles south of you and I LOVE my CA on a 6v system.  When you're out side in OUR weather, all you can hear is rrrwwwrr.....wait 3 seconds,,,,,,wwwwrrrrrrww,,,,,,,,purrr.   All you need is some new plugs or wires or points.  That baby will purr.  Take my word for it.  Heck, I've had to hand crank these way back in the 50's to get em to run.  NOT a problem.  DO NOT buy any of the stated parts off the internet or ESPECIALLY ePay...... Go to Steve NJ and get em.  I've been thinking about changing my CA from 6v to 12, but I'm going to leave it alone because at -45 degrees (wind chilll), it's only 14 below, she POPS off with one round of the st starter.  You'll be happy as will the G.  TRUST me...
