I do not have any pictures of the service vehicles my father used but do I have memories. Remember, when Pop opened his dealership he did it on less than a shoestring. In fact, Frank Garber, the Harrisburgh Branch Manager asked Pop if he had enough money for freight. Then if he sold the tractor would he pay them for it. Therefore, our vehicles were hand me down used trucks. Our first vehicle was a used 30 something Chevrolet Truck. We used that to deliver equipment with. To make service calls Pop used his '37 Ford . Mom objected so we bought a used Model A Ford coupe. That was our service vehicle. We painted it Persian Orange put a few decals on it and used it. I remember going to and from service calls with our tools in the trunk. Driving through the farm fields and blowing the OOGA OOGA horn at our customers. Later after WWII Pop bought a used 1948 F-1 Ford Pickup. That was our service truck and my most favorate vehicle. I remember towing, hauling, dating, vacationing, and doing just about anything on that 1948 Ford F-1 Pickup. In fact, whenever I go to an antique vehicle show I always look for a 1948 Ford F-1 - there is always one there - and have my picture taken with it. In my office are two models of F-1 1948 Fords. My favorate vehicle.
Hey, I got windy but that's the way it was. The day I got my driver's lisence I got home and Pop gave me the keys to the truck. "Go to Westminster, MD and pick up 2 WD's"
Ladies and Gentlemen, That was a fun part of my life.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Good Luck!
Bill Long

Bill, was your F-1 painted orange as well? I'm restoring a '49 F-1 and am toying with the idea of a nice shade of orange...that, or the original green. -Wes

I think it would be fun to have a 1940-46 Chevy 2 ton. Paint it PO1 and cream or maybe Gleaner silver. It could haul seed corn in the spring and a tractor up to Hutchinson in late July. It may even be nice to power it with 427 Chevy truck engine or a 455 Olds with auto trans. But I need to get the tractor and 8 or 10 "Honey Does" done first.

I always thought it would be cool to paint an old Ford like a delivery truck and use it to haul my tractors to shows.

Years ago my grandfather had a 56 Ford F100....when he got done with it, it was a real pretty shade of pearl green with a super healthy 390 in it....but he bought it off the local Ford Tractor Dealer all decal'd up.....wasn't AC but still an old service truck.

I have Dads 66 F250 that had Orange Cap Service decals on the doors. You can't read the decals now I would love to have a close up picture of that Decal if anyone has one that survived so i can have it reproduced.

About 5-6 years ago, I was looking at a Chevy Panel Delivery truck around the 36-37 circa that was for sale. The Plan I had for that truck was to paint it PO1 with the AC Diamonds on the doors with our shop name on the panel area. Unfortunately, because it was an East Coast vehicle, at closer examination, it was just to far gone to save. It would've cost me a fortune to redo it. Would've been an excellent canadate for a service/business type truck if it was in a lot better shape. Maybe somethin' else will come along some day. I finally found a Model A Vicky. That only took 30 years.... lol!

Dad's last delivery truck was a B series Mack; can't remember if it was a B-59 or B-61 Thermodyne. It had started it's life as a tandem semi-tractor. We had about 12' of frame added to it and threw on a 20' flatbed with 10' beavertail. I remember it hauling small combines, tractors of all sizes (including Two-Twenty's), cornheads from LaPorte, plow frames from LaCrosse, and an occasional small building for some customers. If we could load it, the truck could pull it. Never got much over 60 mph (unless going downhill) but could hang with any truck going uphill. Twin stick 5x2 transmission. I'll look for an old picture this weekend.

When I worked at Peterson Implement in Blooming Prairie MN they had a 195? Chevy that got sold on their sale in 1997. Was in real good original condition. Well taken care of. I used to change the oil and clean out the oil bath every year even though it probably didn't get more than a 100 miles on it a year. They really didn't use it for anything anymore other than to run between the farms they owned during field work. They also had a late 60s or early 70s Chevy dually that was also well taken care of that they rarely used anymore too. Does anybody know about these like where they went? Sale was sometime in 1997.
