What I had incorrectly indentified as a RotoBee 2035, is a 3 hp Allis Chalmers "R-3." I have to assume that R-3 stands for "Rototiller 3 hp". Search for that and you will find very little in the way of information. However, a little reflection (and a reminder from someone else) prompted me to google a Simplicity 3 hp rototiller. Fairly quickly I was able to zero in on this being an AC painted 3 HP Simplicity RotiCul - there were a couple options for the exact model of this. Jackssmmallengines.com had some parts diagrams and the assortment of pieces I had disassembled so far looked about right and the part number on the worm gear drive housing (18392) matched the Simplicity 552 (990552). B&S engine code says it was made in about 1973.  So, now I have a manual and I know what on earth this is!

The tine seals are a standard size for a 1.5 bore with a 1" shaft. I am going with the SKF 9878, specs say it is for a 1.5x1.

My only question now, is: Is GL4 140 weight oil acceptable as the gear lubricant?  I have seen some things saying it is but I thought I would just check first.

Update: The drive shaft seal is Simplicty Part # 2118393SM. I couldn't find specs on this so I bought one off ebay that was claiming to be NOS for that PN (I am skeptical, I think it is new stock).  But the PN stamped on that is JC-075-1874-8. My calipers, and some reflection on the stamped PN indicate the bore and shaft specs are 0.75 x 1.874 x 0.25. That corresponds to an SKF 7690 seal.

Now, I just need to figure out how to get that rear seal out. Shaft appears to be held in place by snap rings installed under the oil seal and rear dust shield. Dust shield is a tight fit and I cannot get anything in to pry it out.

From experience, I'd say GL-4 should serve you just fine.Wink

It is a work in progress, I will probably post some more once I get this cleaned up and put back together.

Ok, next question. I need to replace the drive shaft oil seal, which is part #3 in the diagram. But that is under the shield (part #15) and I cannot get under the shield to pry it out and get at the oil seal. I am thinking the shaft would have to come out first (tine shaft and gear is already out). So, which way does that drive shaft come out? The parts diagram makes me think it come out the back. Anyone disassembled a gear box like this have any pointers?
