There was one of them on Craigslist here for the longest time about a year ago I don't think anyone ever bought it think the guy ended up trying to part it out. I would guess they are really hard to get parts for.

Dan73 or others: if you are aware of a parts ED40, please let me know. Like the others have said...not a ton of value but finding good parts is a challenge.

Be sure to check the lift housing in back, lots broke and welded there. Serial # under seat, on left.

You stumbled on one, you mean you found one ? to buy?
They are somewhat rare. AC made about 5000 of them in England, less than 500 were imported onto the US, maybe some more into Canada. It is a 40 hp tractor, about the size of a D 15, weighs around 3500 lbs. The engine is a Standard Richardo English made diesel engine. This is where the ED comes from, english made diesel, about 40 hp. If you do a google search you will come up with pictures and specs. About the value, I don't have a clue. Tom

The reason the ED-40 has the Standard Richardo engine is because Massey-Ferguson changed from that engine to the 3 cylinder Perkins in the M-F 35 tractor and Standard didn't have a customer anymore for that engine and offered A-C a heck of a deal. Why else would A-C switch from a Perkins in the D-272 to a Standard Richardo when M-F was switching the other way. Tractor production numbers will show who made the right move.

I did not buy it, I'm still thinkin about it. She is in rough shape and it doesn't sound like I can make anything on it. He said he had it running once but who knows. Any idea what one in rough shape that could run is worth? I can't find any for sale.

I bought one cheap years ago and worked it pretty hard clearing lots and pastures with a beefed up 6' bush hog. The lift gave the most trouble. Kinda jerky. But once started the drive train held up well.
It was coldnatured and even in 100 degree weather would require ether starting fluid or gas on a rag near the intake to start up. Tried different glow plugs, etc. with no luck. But sold it later for a profit. Can't complain .

I paid $350 for it and had to cut a trail down through the woods to get to it. It had a busted RH rear housing from the owners brother in law tying a cable on it to pull with!! The owner had given up on it, even though he had all the parts to fix it. About 3 days work? and I drove it out. It was more green than orange from the dampness. As I said I worked it pretty hard and sold it with the bush hog for $ 700 as I recall. I saw it a couple years later on the Kubota dealers lot [traded in] and they wanted $ 1500!! without any equipment. You know it must be a weakness, but I thought about rescuing the old boy again and taking him home to retire for shows and rides etc.

I bet if you had told the dealer the history of the tractor you could have saved it for the 700 you sold it for they probably only had 500 in it and where asking 1500. That is what I would expect around here. That is a great story I bet the last owner looked shocked when you drove it out.

I remember rebuilding the steering box on it.Man ,it sure could have used power steering! The local generator shop took it as a personal challenge to overhaul the Lucas starter and generator and we used an older Ford voltage regulator .
The water pump began leaking one day and the local bearing and seal place matched up seals from a detroit diesel [the 2 stroke kind]. The hand clutch on the RH rear drive was "converted " to a full lock up. The piston in the lift was machined to carry a larger more modern ring setup. But it was cheap on fuel and oil..once started!

He did look shocked!! But he didn't fuss or anything at me [maybe at his dumb Brother in law who broke it for him down in the woods …] Now I wonder where it went….. Old tractors we sell sometimes are like old girls we dated way back when…is it better to think about them than to hunt them up ? Though the old tractor will be a lot easier to explain to the wife. Well, maybe…. |

I think it is probably best not to track down either old tractors or ex girlfriends. It is often easy to forget they are in the past for a reason....
