I have a 1968 Allis Chalmer 190 model tractor. The problem I am having is once this tractor warms up (after about an hour of use) I can't keep it running. We have drained the gas tank, rebuilt the carb, and put a new coil on it. When it starts to cut out, if I full choke it, it will idle, but won't run it you try to move. If I let it sit for a couple of hours, it will start and run, but as soon as it warms up again, it does the same thing. This tractor is driving me and my mechanic crazy. Any suggestions??

Does it have the Holley carb. on it, or the Zenith?

I had a similar experience with our 190 & 190XT gas tractors, both with the Holley carbs. There is a round plate/disc, called the "air horn plug" located on the very bottom of the fuel bowl. It is held in place by a strap and one screw. There is supposed to be a gasket (which is very small, thin and easily dislodged) between the fuel bowl and air horn plug. If this gasket moves out of place it will allow air to suck in and fuel to leak out. I got tired of messing with the Holley, and put the updated Zenith on both tractors. BIG improvment!

If a coil or condenser gets moister in them sometime after they heat up the moister will steam up and can short out the secoundary and the ignition will fail.

I don't know if the 190's have points but if they do a condenser is a cheap and easy thing to try. I often see coils like this that are aged and left out in the weather. You stated you had changed the coil already.

The true diagnosis would be to know after it shuts down if you have spark from the coil. This will show you an ignition problem or a fuel problem. With a carb issue as discribed above I'd find another carb, even if it's not the perfect fit, and try that. Best to change it right after it shuts down. If it'll stay running then you know a new carb or at least a repair is in order.

We took the carb off, and put a kit in it about 4 weeks ago...but it still could be the issue.  I am about to pull my hair out with this thing.

We have a gas powered IH utility tractor that acted kind of like that.It would do the same as yours with regard to just barely running at idle with the choke pulled out. We often used the tractor for moving a bale of hay or some other very short task and it never bothered us, but if you tried to rake or bale or anything that took very long it would just quit, generally when you needed alittle more power like going up a hill. The way I finally found the problem was taking the drain plug out of the carb after it died. This proved there was no fuel passing through the needle valve after the engine died and I did have a good fuel flow to the carb inlet. It took me more than a year to find that the rubber tip on the needle valve had swollen and would block the fuel flow into the carb when engine was warm. The updated needle valve is compatable with ethanol and the old one was not.  I always kind of thought it was a fuel problem cause I always had spark after it died. We would finish any long task with a different tractor and forget about it in between times it died.  It was a sweet thing when we finally fixed it. RW

See how long it runs with the gas cap cracked or off. Ours was doing the same thing this spring. Turned out it wasnt venting and was creating a vacuum in the tank.

You said you put a kit in the holley carb. Where did you find a kit to fit it? I see kits that fit a Holley on a Ford but can't find one for the 190XT.

I'd try replacing the condensor, cheap and easy.

I have checked seadment bowls, took them off and cleaned with clean gas. I will try cracking the gas cap, or removing it today and see if that helps. RW, my tractor always starts this when I need a little more power, just as you described in your comment. Nearly always when I am going up hill. I am leaning towards this being the culprit.  Dave, my mechanic got the rebuild kit, not sure what he used, or where he purchased it. I will talk to him and see. Thanks for all of the helpful posts!

Make sure it not vapor locking. You can usually pour a little cold water on fuel pump and it will run better for a while.

I think we narrowed it down today. We're pretty sure there is something in the gas tank causing the problem. There was some sludge in the sedament bowl this morning. I cleaned it, and the filter out, and it is running better. It did act up on me one more time today, I took the sedament bowl off and repeated what I had done earlier, and we got good results.

So far, so good. I've got it running pretty decent now.
