    Posted: 04 Aug 2018 at 6:30pm
Hello,

I have a 1979 Allis Chalmers 185. I am having some trouble with the power director. When I hook a 5 tooth Chisel to the rear and the tractor is hot, I have trouble with it keeping in motion. I generally run in 1st gear in hi or low range on the power director. When it gets hot the tractor stops, which leads me to have power director issues. I am not certain if that is the problem yet. When the tractor stops I still have power steering.

I have also tried putting the tractor in high gear and put the brakes on while the PTO is engaged the to test the main clutch. The PTO continued to turn.

I am looking to test the pressure of the pump, but I have little to no knowledge about what section should be checked on the pump. I do not have 185 manual, I have a 190 manual. I am confused on which part of the pump is the section that operates the power director. Or where I should check the pressure.

Has any one ever encountered this problem or could some one provide me a picture of the section of the pump that should be tested. I plan on checking the rest of the pump as well to check the other hydraulic pressures.

Well any helpful information that any would could provide would great.

Thanks, Chris

You should get a more specific answer from some of the other guys but you need to check the pressures at the valve for the power director. There's adjustment that can be made but that's usually to equal out the pressure on the high and low side.
If it's only happening when it's hot and then is ok when cool I doubt it's the main clutch. I would also think you would need to hook something up to the pto shaft to see if it's still turning. There might be enough drag from the main clutch to turn it with no equipment on it?
If you pm me your email I might be able to send you some photos of the pages that talk about the power director from the service manual.

There is a relief valve in control valve. With a 7/8 wrench, remove plug at bottom of valve opposite spool. Remove all parts clean and polish, replace and see if it holds.        MACK

When you clean the relief valve be aware the spring that is under the cap is under quite a bit of pressure and can come out pretty forceful.

Do you both suggest that I take the actuator off the tractor since the relief valve is on the the bottom pointing downward?

Thanks Chris

I took mine apart on my 180, but my 170 looks the same. I took mine apart with it in the console and took it out, cleaned it and put it back in. There are also some shims to adust the pressure so note how many and wear they are positioned.

Do what Mack said cap has shims in it keep it turned up. then remove spring.and guide and spool top of spool has little plunger in end . most calls I get they don't see it pulls out of the end might have to use magnet check small hole in end of spool. put oil in spool push in plunger oil should spray out of hole .You should have 5 parts plus shims

A 170 doesn't have a hydraulic power director clutch. What are you talking about ??

You are absolutely correct DrAllis. I have a 170,180 and 190 and I meant 190. The 170 has the power director with the long lever on the side for high/low.
