stock sizes are 9-24 or optional 10-24
I have two B's a 38 and newest 40
the 38 has 8-24 tires, they dig really hard and can spin them in any ground in 1st or 2nd gear, even plowing.
the 40 i just bought yesterday at an auction and has brand new 11.2-24, I plan on selling them and going with a stock size but not till after i drive it down the road and drop the plow in the groung with the bigger tires.
whats do you guys have, and how do you like them? I'd like to put stock size on the 38, because the 40 i will either fix up and sell or part out.

Mine has 9.5-24 tires on it. I have enough traction to lift the front up. I do not have any fluid or weights.

Original mid to late prtoduction 38 rim locks look like this. The footed clamp fit behind and over the short angle tabs rivited to the bottom of the bead flange on very narrow rims. The ones used before this were special for the 37 & early 38s with the split rims. You can also tell a 38 wheel center from all others by looking at the valve stem notches. They are half round and not the usual V notches. The bolt holes are 3/4 also. Not 5/8

The rims on the 38 are not original rims. They are basicaly an IH rim which was more readily available in some areas the the original rims. The early B had a 7" rim and 8" tire, later ones, about 1940 had the 8" rim and 9 inch tire and near the end of the 40's they went to a 9" rim and a 10" tire. I have had all three sizes of rims at one time or another.

If it was mine, I wouldn't think about going smaller than the 11.2's. The pre 1940 8.25-24 is basically the same tire as today's 11.2-24

The rim width you have to work with plays a important roll on what tire size fits. Slapping a set of 11-2s on a 7 inch wide B rim is not a good match.

11.2 is the modern equivalent of the B era 10x24. Look on the Miller Tire web site for a good tire size conversion chart.

I don't understand why11.2's wouldn't fit fine on a 7 inch rim. It is the exact same tire as an 8.25 from pre 1940 and that was put on a 6 inch rim according to the chart.

10X24 on my model B. I like them fine doing Woods Belly mower work. Perhaps plowing would make a difference. At any, I love the B. Keep her running fine. Going orange is going great!

the chart tells you that 11.2 should go on a 10" rim. You can't compare old tire sizes to today's tires. Todays tire are built entirely different. Bob

Bob, have a conversation with somebody that worked the tire industry for many years. The only thing different between the old 8.25, the 10 and the 11.2 is the width of rim it was put on and the way it was measured. There is a difference in the shape and size of the bead but the tire is basically the same, just numbered different for a different rim. Talk to TedBuiskerN.IL. he is the in house expert and can tell you all about the tire sizes and changes.

If you read the side of a 11.2 tire it will tell you to use a 10" rim. If you put it on a 7" rim the tire will be round, not flat because the traction surface is much wider the a 8" or 9" tire. Bob

Look at the drawings in the Miller tire page. There is a drawing of the early tire and how it was measured. Look at the shape of that tire on a narrow rim. It is rounded. That's the way it was and that's the way it will be now if you put it on a narrow rim. I'm not saying it is the best thing to do for traction. I'm saying that's the way the early tires were. If you took an 8.25 tire and put it on a 10 inch rim, it would be flat like the 11.2 tire is on a 10 inch rim. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 19 Oct 2011 at 5:41am |
