I'll be pulling the front cover of my B to replace the cam shaft bearings. I am wondering what kind of seals to get for the crankshaft. I see 2 piece felt seals and 1 piece rubber lip seals online. Which should I get? My engine is a 1941 CE engine, if that makes any difference. This is new to me.
Thanks! |

If you put a speedi-sleeve on the spiral cut into the front of the crank get a lip type seal. There are two different lip style seals depending on which front cover you have, the OD size is different. If not use the felt and soak it in oil first. Sometimes the felt seal will be so tight it helps in centering it on the crank. Although the felt seals tend to weep a bit more. I prefer to switch over to the lip type seal. Either way, it is difficult to get the front cover perfectly centered on the crank. Stay away from the "gasket in a tube" most of it will eventually end up in you oil pick-up screen.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

Thanks. I watched the oil pan gasket video in the knowledge base and it was helpful, even though it's for the W series. What is a speedi-sleeve and how is it installed?
Is it one of those "Heat it up then slip it on before it cools" kinda things? Also... I've read a lot about having to have a special tool to center the seal. What are these and where do you get them?

![]() Here's a pic of my front seal, if that helps. It looks like it just drives in.

Speedi-Sleeves are a super thin stainless ring that presses on cold with the tool provided with the speedi-sleeve. You could get the size you need from NAPA or any bearing place.
This would press on the front of the crank after the timing gear is in place, so wait to do this until ready to do the final go together if your going to have the crankshaft ground. As it will need to go deeper than the cup provided with the sleeve just find a matching piece of pipe and be sure that the end you use has a perfectly straight and square end. You would be very lucky to find the tool to center the front cover. I have a good eye and do it free-hand and most do fairly well. I have turned a spacer ring that does the same thing as the factory tool. Your cover will need the entire seal assembly removed and then get the lip seal that fits the hole.

Thanks Paul.
So what is the original seal then? It looks like this one just presses in. Maybe it doesn't? I don't know.

Thanks Dick. I've heard Napa has these seals, does anyone know the part number? Another fellow who has overhauled a few B's told me to get a double lipped seal.

Thanks Dave. Mine is CE10163K, so perhaps it's too early of an engine for it to work?

![]() I have 38 B, I tried making a cork seal, but couldn't peen the washer tight enough. The oil return groves just kept letting oil drip. I tried a lip seal, no speedy sleeve, and drip drip drip. Then I looked at a 1/4 of the crank sticking out and thought I could add enother seal in there. So now there are two front lip seals, and finally no drips. |

Hello
I have the same problem to find the right seal. Could you tell me the maximum seal width we can put for the seal replacement? Or what is the lip seal reference you use? I understand that you put 2 lip seal, one behind the other? Thanks
