Can the front crank shaft seal be replaced with motor in tractor? Pulled my 8010 in yesterday to hook baler up and seen oil dripping on shop floor while setting there idling. Curious how big job is to change front seal on 301

Can be done in chassis, yes. Radiator fan and shroud must be pulled out sideways to get room enough to work. Have to have a homemade puller to pull off the tapered fit pulleys that requires maybe 10 tons of pull. Now, you have to chisel/dig/collapse the seal like pulling a tooth, OR remove the timing cover itself. You need a homemade seal installer (Pipe of correct diameter) to install the seal. I suppose when I was much younger 4 hrs of labor would get it done. The ugly and hardest part is getting the old seal out without removing the timing cover.

Thanks doc. I love baling with this 8010. Had to switch everything over last minute. Guess I’ll start tearing down front of tractor

Just curious...what’s special about the crankshaft pulley that you have to have a homemade puller? Just that it requires so much force to remove?

Not much room to work with. I made our puller, from a flat bar, that had two holes at the outer ends, where bolts screwed into the threaded holes in the puller. The hole in the center of the bar, had a threaded hole. I would use silicone caulk to glue a fender washer to the front of the crankshaft, bolt the puller to the crankshaft pulley, then run a bolt into the threaded center hole of the puller, start tightening the bolt until the pulley pops free. It's been a long time since I've done one, but if I remember correctly, it was easier to remove the timing cover, to replace the seal, then trying to do it in the tractor.

Screw front frank bolt back in after removing washer and use it as pusher against puller plate.
Drill old seal for big metal screws and use short slide hammer. A little heat around seal will loosen loctit that is on seal + will expand aluminum around seal, making it easier to remove.
A short piece of pipe with a bar across the end with hole for bolt, works good to pull new seal in. A few taps with hammer on front while pulling seal in helps. MACK

I did it with my radiator in on my 7000, but the 8010 might be a bit closer than that. Used a short puller (make sure you pull with the bolt holes in the center of the pulley and not on the edge, it's a rubber isolated pulley, so you'll just end up ruining it if you pull by the edges!). and had just enough room to tap on it with a heavy metal bar as I tightened it. The screw trick worked great, just watch to not get into the aluminum cover. One of those jobs you cuss at quite a bit, but once it's done, it isn't quite as late as you thought it was. If you need to change the antifreeze, I'd probably just pull the radiator if I did it again to give myself plenty of space and not risk damaging the radiator.

Sorry to bother you or butt in like this but do you no where I can find a Hd5b crawler dozer radiator cap cause I cannot find one on the internet and this is the only place or people that would probably have one .
Reckon you or any of the guys on here can point me in the right direction .
My dad died and he willed this dozer to me and he never had the resources to find a cap and this is the only thing keeping me from actually running or starting the dozer.
Sir if you can help me please point me in the right direction and if you can text me at this number 3185813096 my name is Eb Springer and by the way an old radiator cap would be great too..
