    Posted: 18 Dec 2017 at 7:31am
Im a newer fan of Allis, I grew up  hooked on Deere and Ford tractors, (Any more I realize that there was never a better tractor made anywhere but here IN the US), that being said My wife and I have had the fortune to aquire one of the last 6080 made, and this tarctor has some flaws but has pulled its weight. I would like to buy a another 6080 or 6070 with  a cab some day that is more wore out because I have thinking that it would be fun to tear it down and repower it with a 301. I guess I am asking the more experienced wiser Aliis guys if this is totaly out of the question??????? where there is a will there a way after all its possible to put an IH head on a Johndeere Block.

that engine is basically a 301 minus 2 cylinders.   nearly as much power and better fuel economy.   unless you are just wanting to swap for the heck of it, just as well overhaul the original engine for less headache.

I understand the 4 cyl engine in the 6000 series, is the best they ever made.  Why change it????

I agree that 4 cylnder is a great motor, and I am amazed at the reliability of the motor, (its a cold blooded tractor, but lots of tractors are cold blooded. I have the tires loaded and a loader on it, and we mounted a brand new loader (Allied 595), i can pull a 375 bushel spreader through the mud with it. (the tractor is a tank) The problem i have found spreading manure motoring around picking up bales, and other chores, is the tractor just does not have enough torgue. As soon as the load pulls the tractor pulls the motor close too or under the turbo your done, I've experienced this same thing running JD 4955's the rated is horsepower is enough, but the weight to displacement ratio is weigh off. I think that if the rumors are true that allis had 90 horse version with the 301 as its power source, I believe that it would have been one of the best tractors that allis ever built, (its a shame that management ruined the company, because their enigeers had some really forward thinking ideas.) I am thinking about doing this for the heck of it later in life as a project (from the bottom up). It should be noted that I am not going to change the current tractor that I have it's a gem, I would love to do this with just plain worn out tractor.

My concern would be the thrust bearing problem the early 6080 had. Was the cured cast into any 301 engine blocks. It was not a problem in any application the 301 went into as far as I know so I would suspect the 301 was never updated to the heavier thrust bearing. I suppose the external bandaid fix would work for a 301.

Why go backwards?

Only way to improve a 6080 would be a little Cummins or maybe a Perkins. If it’s mfwd sell it to me reasonable.

They are great tractors as is   ...   They get a lot of there torque from the heavy flywheel and extremely heavy clutch we have 6 in the fleet keep them wound up by driving them like a truck the trans is fully sinkronized 4 speed shift that thing on the run . the high low requires stoping and I don't think the trust bearing will hold up in the 301

EXACTLY!  Below 1500 rpm, the engine will bog down and die pretty easily.  Keep it above 1500 and you won't kill it.  I also agree that the Fiat built PTO would kill the 301 thrust bearing in a hurry.

I agree with victory Allis here. If I was going to do anything different, mine would get a 4bt Cummins in it. I had mine overhualed 3 years ago, it starts much better cold now. I actually think it might have been cheaper to put a Cummins in it though. Nice thing is it shares fuel and oil filters with my 185. Wouldn't with a Cummins in it.
