Finally got over to check it out- they undone the hot wire - the one direct from the battery, when you put the hot to the place on the starter the bendix- selinoid runs continuous, with the key off- with the key on- it does not engage the starter, just runs- only stops when you take the hot off- i rapped on it pretty good with a wrench and no change- also the owner said the last time when he pushed the clutch in the brake light came on and the air cleaner light did too

Not sure how you ENGAGE the solenoid... Normally there is a push button on the dash or floor that you send a 12 v signal to the solenoid with a SMALL WIRE... That pulls in a electric magnet and the BIG WIRE from the battery contacts the BIG WIRE on the starter.... Either you solenoid is fried and stuck ON all the time, or the small wire is sending 12 volts from the switch............ take the SMALL WIRE off the solenoid, then try to connect the BIG wire from the battery... If that works, you SWITCH IS STUCK ON.

Since the starter runs all the time and does not engage, your Bendix might be broken from the constant running... Even if it is the SWITCH, you probably still need to remove the starter and check the Bendix... If it is NOT the SWITCH stuck ( small wire), then the Bendix is the entire problem.

Another update- put a rebuilt starter on this morning and started once - now clicks - isnt there something about a voltage drop ?

If the solenoid clicks then you are sending the signal from the key to the starter on the SMALL wire.. If the starter does not kick in and crank, then you have a bad ground , battery is dead, or new starter is bad......
Since it was doing a lot of spinning when it stuck, i would put the battery on the charger over night... also check battery terminals and cable ends / ground strap... and the LUG on the starter for tight.

Last update -- finally put a relay on it - and works perfect! Wiring is not my specialty - but I got it , it was actually pretty simple once i understood it ! Thanks to all who chimed in !

This can happen on any tractor. Its not just Allis.
I've had to replace safety switches on other makes to make the starter perform. You still might want to check the adjustment of the switches and the switches themselves with an ohm meter. These tractors are getting old and they have done their time... |

All switches work , and in specs,, as safety first!
