 Topic: Allis 500 Tilt Cylinder Specs

Hi All,
I have an Allis 185 with a 500 series loader. I tried to rebuild one of the tilt cylinders a few months ago, but the rod is pitted and scratched from 40+ years of use so it began to leak again soon after the rebuild. I am thinking about replacing the cylinders, so I was wondering if anyone knows the relevant specs for the tilt cylinders for this loader (bore, pin size, stroke, etc.).

I believe your best money spent (on an old loader) would be have someone make you new rods. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE CHROMED. If you store the loader inside and use it somewhat often, the chrome really isn't needed. I've done it in the past with no regrets.

about 10 years ago i had to replace cylinders on a 500 they were twice what kits cost if i remember right.i'll look back and see if i can find receipts with size and who order from.

Thanks for your reply. I looked at the design of the rod while I
had the cylinder apart, and it would not be a simple task to replicate
it. The rod is turned down to a couple of smaller diameters which
allows for a split retainer and the seals to be installed. So maybe I
could have a machine shop do the turning, or maybe they could cut the
rod into pieces, weld the ends onto a new rod, and then turn down the welds. I spoke to a
hydraulic shop locally before I did the rebuild, and basically they told
me that if they did the rebuild I might as well buy new cylinders from them
because of how little price delta there would be because of the labor
charges involved in the rebuild. Based on the info from the hydraulic shop I thought the machine work would be out of the
question. That is also the reason I tried the rebuild myself, which actually was fairly quick and simple, but unfortunately did not work out to well in the long run.
I use the tractor about every two weeks on average, but I store the tractor outside
(my dream machine shed has not magically appeared yet LOL), so whatever
I do it will need to be weather resistant.

As the Dr said, build new rods. Have a local machine/hydraulic shop that builds cylinder rods and chromes them. Cheaper than you would think.

i looked up and purchased 4 cylinders from international hydraulic for 676.93 back in 2011.the originals we could not get apart.they worked well on the loader

I would have new original Allis rods for a 500 loader.(tilt) 785-353-2392

All you need is a tape measure and surplus center. Going through the process on a westendorf right now. Got the new tilts for about 90 each new and new lift cylinders for about 180 each new.

Making the rods is pretty straight forward for a machinist. The originals are about .010 under a standard rod. I have made several. HTH Tracy

Ray, do you still have new 500 loader cylinders or rods? I see this was posted in 2019 but I’ll try calling. I’m looking to replace all of mine on my 500 loader.
